SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Damen Brunner scored the lone goal in the shootout and Jonas Gustavsson stopped all three shots in his first start of the season to lead the Detroit Red Wings to their third win in four games, 2-1 over the struggling San Jose Sharks on Thursday night.
Patrick Eaves scored the equalizer midway through the third period and Gustavsson made 25 saves to get his first win since March 3, 2012, for Toronto against Montreal.
Logan Couture scored the lone goal for the Sharks, who lost 10 of 12 games in February and have just one regulation win in their past 14 games. Antti Niemi made 33 saves.
But Brunner beat Niemi in the second round of the shootout with a forehand and the Red Wings got the win when Ryane Clowe shot wide in the final round.
This game between the only two teams to make the playoffs every season since the 2004-05 lockout took on added importance as both squads have struggled to find consistency in this lockout-shortened season. Both teams are in a...

NOVI, Mich. -- You can take Tomas Holmstrom off the Detroit Red Wings but you can't take him out of the state of Michigan -- at least not yet.
Holmstrom joined his closest friend, Nicklas Lidstrom, in retirement before the current season started. But unlike the former Wings captain, Holmstrom isn't quite ready to pack up his family and head back to Sweden.

The San Jose Sharks may be relieved to end February, but they'd like to do it in positive fashion.
Taking the ice at home against the struggling Detroit Red Wings should help.
The Sharks go for back-to-back wins for the first time this month on Thursday night when they attempt to continue their home success against the Red Wings.
San Jose (9-6-3) has gone 2-6-3 this month...
On February 26th, during the San Jose Sharks-Colorado Avalanche game Comcast SportsNet’s broadcaster had a bit of a slip of the tongue. Clearly he meant to say “his stick,” but it blended together a little bit more than he would have liked and it came out “his d*ck.” I gotta say, it would be much harder to play hockey that way.

Let’s just say that the Detroit Red Wings did not get the benefit of many friendly whistles in a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night. The Wings found themselves facing a 5-on-3 on two separate occasions, totaling about four minutes of game time — and the Kings tied the game at one on the second of those two-man advantages, midway through the third.
And yet, for...

The Rangers are in desperate need of a reliable defenseman to shore up the bottom pairing. Right now, it looks like a competition between Steve Eminger and Matt Gilroy, and neither really instills confidence in the Rangers fan base. Eminger has been steady in previous seasons, but he hasn’t found the lineup consistently so far. Gilroy has had flashes...
Detroit played a strong game from start to finish tonight and earned two points in a 2-1 shootout win in San Jose. Brunner has been the only Red Wings to score in the shootout this year. He's 2-2 and the Wings are 2-0 in the skills competition. This also means our goalies haven't been beaten yet. Though shootout wins don't count as much as regular wins, 2 points is better...
Kyle Quincey with one of the stranger goals this season. Puck is comes off of the glove hand of Bernier, hits him in the back of the head and directs into the back of the net.
I can't pull a Malik and stick around for the end of the game, so feel free to use this post for post-game too.
George does need a new laptop and will be shopping early tomorrow for one, so hopefully...
They say you should just throw the puck at the net, and this goal by Detroit Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey is exactly why. His shot went of Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Bernier’s glove, bounced straight up in the air, hit off his head/back and bounced it. Rob Scuderi tried to knock it out of the air but completely whiffed. Bernier had no idea where the puck was and...
The Red Wings fall in a frustrating manner 2 – 1 to the L.A. Kings. Pressure on both ends of the ice was strong all game. Very few scoring chances were produced for either side and puck possession was the story of the game. The Wings’ first opportunity of the game came at [...]
