It looks like Darren Helm of the Detroit Red Wings will continue his injury struggles this coming season. According to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, the center, known for his speed will start the season on Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR). This is due to separate back and groin issues. What being on LTIR means is he can be out for either 24 days or 10 games. General Manager Ken Holland is not sure how soon he will be available. Said the GM. ‘We believe Helm will be back in three weeks’. But being his progress has been slow since being injured last season, fans and teammates have good reason to feel somewhat skeptical about that quick a return. Although Detroit needs him in the lineup, there is a surplus of forwards and desperately need to get below the salary cap. Once the season starts, Helm can go on LTIR and this move would help both the salary cap issue as well as the forward surplus.
