CINCINNATI (AP) --Shin-Soo Choo scored in the eighth inning on Arizona's fourth wild pitch of the game, and the Cincinnati Reds raced to an improbable 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday. Choo scored both Cincinnati runs, helping the Reds to their third win in the four-game series. Cincinnati (73-55) improved to a season-high 18 games over .500 and increased its lead over Arizona to seven games in the race for the National League's second wild-card playoff spot. Choo singled to lead off the eighth against reliever Eury De La Rosa (0-1) and moved to second when De La Rosa's pickoff attempt rolled away from first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Todd Frazier sacrificed Choo to third, and Choo scored when ball four to Joey Votto was a wild pitch. Mat Latos (13-4) went eight innings for the win. In his previous three starts, Latos (13-4) had received only five runs of offensive support. He made the most of two runs on Thursday, allowing just one run and five hits to Arizona. ...

Mat Latos has strong outing while throwing up on himself between innings (MLB Twitter Roundup)

“Wipe it off and go back to work” was Dusty Baker‘s message to Latos who vomited on three occasions Thursday, via Jeff Walmer. Mat Latos pitched his guts out last night… yeah, I went there. Latos was throwing up in the tunnel between innings and still pitched eight strong allowing only one earned run on five hits while fanning six Diamondbacks in the 2-1 Reds win. Latos...

Mat Latos' slider dubbed 'toughest pitch to hit home run off of'

Mat Latos has been far and away the most reliable starting pitcher for the Reds in 2013. In fact, the right-hander has been nothing short of great since joining Cincinnati prior to the 2012 campaign. Since becoming a Red, the Florida native is an outstanding 27-8 with a tidy 3.24 ERA spanning 59 starts and 378 innings pitched. There have been several factors which have led to his...

Cubs planning to take a run at Shin-Soo Choo this offseason?

It's safe to say that Shin-Soo Choo has been every bit as good as the Reds hoped he would be when they acquired him in a three-team deal from the Cleveland Indians in December. Choo has provided stability at the leadoff spot, batting .281 with a .416 on-base percentage, to go along with 16 home runs, 28 doubles, 14 stolen bases, and 40 RBI, allthewhile playing respectable...

Reds take three of four against Diamondbacks

One of the marks of an ace is the ability to get the job done on days you don't feel quite your best. Mat Latos was feeling a lot closer to his worst when he took the mound Thursday. Latos vomited his way through the early going. "Right before I went out warming up after the first inning and right before the fifth" Latos replied to the when-did-you-throw-up question...

Cubs Rumors: Chicago to pursue Shin-Soo Choo this winter

The Chicago Cubs have impressive pieces in the majors and in the minor leagues. They have Starlin Castro, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Jorge Soler, Albert Almora, Kris Bryant and others. Do you notice anything similar with all of those guys? Five out of the six of them hit right-handed, while the only left-handed hitter is Anthony Rizzo. In the offseason, the Cubs are going to pursue...

Reds not perfect but keep winning

CINCINNATI The last thing Dusty Baker needed to hear Thursday was that his starting pitcher was sick. Mat Latos hadnt been feeling good before he took the mound against the Arizona Diamonbacks and in the middle of the game he stepped back down the hallway from the Reds dugout and let it out. Latos let it all out. With that shape the bullpen is in, Latos being sick really wasnt...

A three year Indians review: Right Field

There are only two positions left for this series, and it’s been a tight race to see if this offense has improved over the last two years. For all the money invested it has not been a slam dunk improvement. This has been due in part to early season injuries which seemed to short circuit both Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher to varying degrees. Over the last five seasons one could...

Reds 2, Diamondbacks 1

Before the game, Dusty Baker didn't know who his closer would be. The Cincinnati Reds manager's eventual choice turned out just right.
