The UFC eliminated one of their interim champions last night when welterweight king Georges St-Pierre unified the 170-pound crown, but it appears the owner of the Octagon’s other manufactured belt may have to defend his before bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz returns from knee surgery. UFC president Dana White revealed following Saturday’s UFC 154 post-fight press conference that Renan Barao (Pictured) will likely have to put his interim title up for grabs at least once before settling things against Cruz. “We were talking about Barao defending his title now,” White shared. “Whether he wants to wait or not, we’re going to go back to him probably soon here and have him defend it.” When asked who Barao might face, White confirmed 21-year-old Michael McDonald will likely get first dibs at the Brazilian’s hardware. Barao has rattled off 29 consecutive victories en route to beating Urijah Faber for the UFC interim crown in July. He was hoping to ride the pine until Cruz returns from injury, but it appears he won’t receive the Carlos Condit treatment. (Picture provided by Steven Houchin of Shotgun Images)
