On Wednesday the newly reconfigured Big East will announce its expansion plans according to an AP report. The seven Catholic schools that will split off from the old Big East will keep the name and have been looking to add schools since last week. The conference will officially announce its added members at a news conference where the league will also announce the details its new television deal with Fox. Xavier has a press conference scheduled for Wednesday after the Big East’s announcement, at which it will confirm that it will be joining. Butler will also join Xavier in leaving the Atlantic 10 for the new conference, and Creighton will be leaving the Missouri Valley Conference to join as well. Those three schools join the so-called Catholic 7 from the old Big East. Georgetown, St. John’s, Villanova, Seton Hall, Providence, Marquette and DePaul left to form their own basketball-only conference for next season. The new Big East has already negotiated to keep its conference tournament at Madison Square Garden. On top of that, the leftover schools from the Big East appear set to form their own, currently unnamed, conference. The institutions currently slated to join that group are South Florida, Connecticut, Cincinnati, Temple, Memphis, Central Florida, SMU and Houston. East Carolina and Tulane will join in 2014, and Navy will be added for football in 2015. The conference would like to add a 12th football school so it can have a championship game in 2015. But the big news that will come on Wednesday is that the new, basketball-only Big East appears to be fully formed. With Butler, Creighton and Xavier joining the Catholic 7, the Big East should be a formidable basketball conference from the start. The additions of those three schools has been expected for a while, but now it appears things are official.
