Lamar Odom’s life has hit front page new ever since new broke that L.O. was abusing drugs and going MIA for days at a time. The harsh reality of what Odom’s life has allegedly spiraled into over the past two years or so is a sad reminder of what can happen to people who live their lives in from of a camera. Odom’s career has been one of ups and downs. Lamar entered the league in 1999, a lanky, skilled big man with guard-like ability with the ball, was said to be one of the NBA’s brightest prospects. Odom never quite lived up to that full potential. After spending four less than spectacular seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers (the team who drafted him) and one more with the Miami Heat, Odom seemingly found his calling as the Los Angeles Lakers 6th-man in 2004. Odom would thrive in a role with the Lakers that seemed tailored for his skill-set. He went on to win two championships and a 6th Man Of The Year award as a member of the NBA’s most storied franchise. That was all before the Lakers tried to deal Lamar after the 2010-11 season. A move that involved Pau Gasol, and now Clipper point guard, Chris Paul. A deal that David Stern blocked from happening. Even though the deal never went down, the damage was done to L.O., who never recovered from the betrayal he felt from the Lakers. Odom went on the defensive and demanded a trade. A request the Lakers obliged. Odom was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks, and his game never quite recovered. Lamar’s time in Dallas was short-lived, and very hostile. He eventually found a new home, back in LA, with the Los Angeles Clippers, the team who drafted him. But at this point, Odom was out of shape, and seemingly lacked the will to play at a high level. In the past few weeks we’ve read stories about Odom’s abuse of hard drugs, including crack cocaine. This alleged drug use has tossed Odom’s world int he mud, and caused his loved ones and former teammates to speak out in concern for the star player. Even Lakers general manager, Mitch Kupchak, has reportedly shown his concern, reportedly offering L.O. a roster spot if he enters and complete a drug rehab program. This report from Radar Online: “The Lakers are a family and even though Lamar isn’t currently on their roster, that doesn’t matter, he’s a two-time championship Laker,” the insider said. “Lamar needs to go to rehab and he’s been told by the team that if he goes and completes treatment, there’ll be a spot for him.” Feeling betrayed by the club Lamar loved (the Lakers) seems to have been a contributing factor in his downward spiral. Perhaps, if these reports are true, getting another shot to be with the team he covets with help Lamar get the help he needs. I know I’m rooting for him!
