PLAYERS: Bryce Brentz
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox
Bryce Brentz might have to wait until 2014 to take the next step. Brentz is likely out for the remainder of the minor league season with a right knee injury, according to the Providence Journal’s Tim Britton. Brentz, who has spent the entire season with Triple-A Pawtucket, reportedly underwent surgery on his meniscus on July 16, and the recovery time for such an injury is typically about six weeks. Brentz originally injured his knee on a slide on July 5, and he was subsequently placed on the disabled list on July 8. Pawtucket manager Gary DiSarcina reportedly said that there’s no reason to rush him back, meaning that the 24-year-old’s year could be over. The Red Sox could still consider Brentz to be an option when rosters expand in September, but it’s unclear what the outfielder’s status will be at that point or whether Boston would even want to use him after such a long layoff. Brentz, a first-round draft pick in 2010, hit .272 with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs in 75 games with the Paw...

REPORT: Red Sox All-Star 1B George Scott Dies

George 'Boomer' ScottAccording to Baseball America's Jim Callis, former Red Sox first baseman, three-time All-Star and 8-time Gold Glove winner George Scott has passed away. In nine seasons with Boston, Scott hit .257 with 154 home runs (or "taters" as he called them). Scott wore a batting helmet while fielding at first, because of experiences with road fans...

All Hail The Dempster

Exactly when did Ryan Dempster become the most reliable starting pitcher the Red Sox have? The dude held the Orioles at bay for five-and-a-third and the bullpen did the rest. Dempster has now given up three runs or less in ten of his last eleven starts dating back to May. Color me surprised. Meanwhile, someone wearing Stephen Drew’s uniform hit two home runs to power the struggling...

David Ortiz Will Not Be Suspended For Destroying Phone With Bat

Big Papi will not be suspended for taking batting practice on a poor defenseless phone in the dugout. David Ortiz had a very memorable meltdown which resulted in him taking a bat and smashing the dugout phone to the bullpen into smithereens on Saturday. Reports are saying it’s unlikely Ortiz gets more than a fine for his tirades, call it fair or not. Safe to say MLB is busy...

WATCH: David Ortiz destroys phone after strikeout, gets tossed

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz was extremely dissatisfied with a call of home plate umpire Tim Timmons, and he let everyone know about it.  After a 3-0 (relatively high) pitch was called strike one by Baltimore Orioles reliever Jairo Asencio, Ortiz never recovered and whiffed badly on a pitch out of the zone.  After saying a few words on his way to the dugout, he way took his bat...

Recap: Lester & Ortiz carry Sox to series win

(AP Photo/Nick Wass) I, and I am sure many of you, had very little faith in the Sox winning the series. Well, they proved us wrong, and won their first series against the Orioles this season, behind Jon Lester and David Ortiz. Jon Lester returned to old form, shutting down the Orioles in convincing fashion. Lester went 7 very strong score-less innings, scattering 4 hits, 2 walks...

David Ortiz Takes Out Frustrations On Dugout Phone

Video: David Ortiz destroys dugout phone after ejection

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz destroyed the dugout phone on Saturday night when he returned to the dugout after he had thought he earned his third walk of the evening with a 7-2 lead on the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh inning. The home plate umpire ruled the 3-0 pitch a ball even though Ortiz was headed towards first base. Ortiz eventually struck out and had words with the home...

O's Lose to Red Sox; Do they need more help?

At this point, we all know that the Baltimore Orioles lost 7-3 last night to the Red Sox at a sold-out Camden Yards on Saturday night. Stephen Drew tagged the Orioles for two home runs, and David Ortiz went bat-sh*t crazy in the seventh inning after being ejected for a questionable call on strikes. Scott Feldman had a so-so start, going only five innings and allowing four...

Red Sox-Orioles Live: Jon Lester, Sox Look to Finish Series Strong in Rubber Match With O’s

11:58 a.m.: Mike Carp once again stepped up when given an opportunity Saturday, so, as a result, he’ll also be in Sunday’s starting lineup. Carp will bat sixth and play left field — which is the same scenario as Saturday’s. In fact, John Farrell might as well have recycled Saturday’s lineup card, as he’s going with the exact same starting nine. If it ain’t broke, don’t...
