The Red Sox have reportedly made two under-the-radar signings. Baseball America — which compiles a list of minor league transactions that are conveyed by Major League Baseball — reports that the Red Sox have signed right-hander Charlie Haeger and left-hander Christian Perdomo. Both hurlers join the organization with rather interesting stories. Haeger is a 29-year-old knuckleballer with 34 big league appearances to his credit. He last pitched in the majors with the Dodgers in 2010, going 0-4 with an 8.40 ERA in nine games (six starts). The righty is 2-7 with a 6.40 ERA in 83 career innings. If Haeger’s name sounds familiar, it’s because this isn’t his first stint with the Red Sox organization. He actually pitched in five games with Double-A Portland during the 2011 season, going 4-1 with a 3.24 ERA in eight starts. The Sox released Haeger prior to last spring training, and he didn’t pitch at all in 2012. Perdomo, meanwhile, arrives in Boston as an undrafted free agent who attended Advanced Software Analysis Junior College in Brooklyn. The 6-foot-5 Dominican Republic native only pitched in three games last season, according to the school’s web site, but interestingly he previously attended George Washington High (the same school that produced Manny Ramirez). It’s highly unlikely that either pitcher will make much of an impact in 2013, but aren’t the best feel-good stories the ones that come completely out of left field? Have a question for Ricky Doyle?
