It’s sounding as if Matt Garza will soon join the Rangers. It’s also sounding like the Red Sox were never really players for the right-hander. According to FOXSports.com, the Rangers are close to acquiring Garza from the Cubs in exchange for a strong package of prospects, which is something that the Red Sox were apparently hesitant to send to Chicago. The Red Sox were unwilling to part with any top-tier prospects in a trade for Garza, according to WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford. Garza is 6-1 with a 3.17 ERA in 11 starts this season, and he should provide a boost to whichever team he ends up joining. The Cubs’ asking price is believed to be high, however, as Garza is seen as the best pitcher available leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The Red Sox’ hesitancy to trade top-tier prospects for Garza reportedly stems from Boston viewing the pitcher as a rental player. Garza is slated to become a free agent after this season, and the Sox reportedly aren’t sold on the idea of offering the 29-year-old a contract extension. Have a question for Ricky Doyle?
