During the second intermission Wednesday night in Montreal, frustration boiled over for Carolina Hurricanes forward Eric Staal who was seen “throwing a goalie stick” into the locker room area and also seen “storming out of the locker room” on two occasions until being chased down into a separate room and being cooled down by coach Paul Maurice, TSN reported. The Hurricanes were shutout 4-0 in Montreal and kept with 5 shots 34 minutes through the game. The Hurricanes captain Staal has a league and career low in plus/minus at -18, and has only four goals, and eight points through 19 games, on pace for a career low in both categories. “We didn’t play” Staal stated. “We showed up halfway through the second period and played the third period, we got what we deserved.” With the frustrations possibly boiling over into the locker room, it all but seems that Maurice has lost control of his own team. Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford spoke with...

What is Jay Harrison's role?

Jay Harrison is a player who I have been following with interest all season. Going into training camp, I had him as someone who could have been lost on waivers because there were eight defensemen aiming to make the team. He ended up making the starting lineup and since then he has played on both the powerplay and penalty kill and has bounced around among the defense corps in terms...

Changes For The Canes? Not Yet.

from Chip Alexander of Canes Now at the News & Observer, Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said today that neither a coaching change nor player trades have been planned—for now. The Canes have lost six of the past seven games after a 4-0 loss Wednesday to the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre. Carolina is 6-10-3, dropping to 14th place in the Eastern...

Things that make people say "Hmmm..."

The Hurricanes are lacking talent in their top-six. You know it, I know it, everyone who watches hockey knows it. Fortunately, the team is finally blessed some organizational depth and have a few forwards currently on the roster who have top-six potential. If there was good thing that came from the injury to Jussi Jokinen, it was that Paul Maurice finally gave players like Anthony...

First Time, Shame on You. Second Time, Shame on Me.

Paul Maurice’s contract is up at the end of this season and it could be time for the Carolina Hurricanes to part ways with the head coach for a second time. Earlier this season, GM Jim Rutherford mentioned to the press that he was not going to fire Maurice after his slow start to the season, but maybe he should rethink that because the firing talks are only going to heat up...

Game 19 Preview: Hurricanes at Canadiens

Carolina Hurricanes (6-9-3) at Montreal Canadiens (7-7-3)Bell Centre, 7 p.m.TV: TSN, RDS This is one game I have been looking forward to all season because it marks the first time this year that the Hurricanes will face former teammate Erik Cole. I've said a lot about Cole this off-season and how I felt that Carolina can replace him because he wasn't much of a possession...

Eric Staal Struggling

Eric Staal has had a nightmarish start to the 2011-12 NHL season for the Carolina Hurricanes. Staal is an ugly minus 18 rating ranking him 699 in the National Hockey League. - that is dead last - as a result, his production is way down, (19-4-4-8).  Nobody saw this coming at the beginning of the season. Eric Staal is renowned for being consistently great; he is a...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Montreal Canadiens 11/16/11 Scoring Chances

This was a game that I would like to erase from my memory permanently if it were possible, but I have a job to and am here to share all of the ugly details of the 4-0 shutout the Canes endured at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens. I don't even need to get into scoring chances to illustrate how ugly this game was for Carolina because through the first 30 minutes, they were being...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Philadelphia Flyers 11/14/11 Scoring Chances

Some say that the NHL is a sport where you live and die by special teams and while I believe that controlling the play at even strength is more important, special teams performance can determine the outcome of a lot of games. Take Carolina's game last night against the Flyers for instance, the chances were even at 10 a piece when playing at even strength but the difference is...

Montreal Canadiens Erik Cole finally clicking with new linemates, while Eric Staal is in a season-long slump

After a very slow start during which he only had one assist in seven games to go along with a-3 plus/minus rating, newly acquired Erik Cole has finally clicked with his new linemates diminutive center David Desharnais and power forward Max Pacioretty. In the last eleven games, during which his ice-time climbed finally climbed over 15 minutes/game, Cole scored four goals and added...

Sabres-Hurricanes Preview

The Carolina Hurricanes are allowing goals at an alarming rate, contributing greatly to their current slump. A matchup with the Buffalo Sabres could be what they need to get back on track. Carolina seeks its fourth win in five meetings with Buffalo when the teams face off Friday night at the RBC Center. The Hurricanes (6-10-3) have lost six of seven after falling 4-0 to Montreal...

Pressure On Nash In Columbus

from Dan Rosen of NHL.com, He is the face of a struggling franchise that has become the butt of several poor-taste yet arguably just jokes. He is the captain and the guy that is in the second of an eight-year contract that pays him $62.4 million. He is the leader of a franchise that has never won a playoff game and has gone 3-13-1 to start the season. “When you win, everyone...
