FLORHAM PARK, NJ - MAY 02: Head coach Rex Ryan of the New York Jets holds up a picture of rookie running back Shonn Greene as he speaks to the media during minicamp on May 2, 2009 at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, New Jersey. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

It would seem that Rex Ryan is seeing the err of his ways, but that really isn’t the case. Ya see, at this time last year, the New York Jets head coach took to the podium at the NFL Scouting Combine and guaranteed that the Jets would win the Super Bowl. Now, the guarantee in itself shouldn’t be knocked. After all, who doesn’t want to see confidence from their coach or players. But the fact that he thought it would be a good idea to kickoff the Scouting Combine with the guarantee just made him see like he didn’t get it. But, Rex likes the stage, no matter what. Rex didn’t make a guarantee this year, but he still made it about him.

Once again, Rex took to the media and brought a message. First he apologized for making a guarantee a year ago, which I don’t think anyone was looking for or even cares for, and then decided to hint at going to the Super Bowl next year, rather than just come right out and say it.

“It was a huge mistake to make that guarantee,” Ryan said. ”In hindsight, I think it put undue pressure upon our team. . . . Obviously we had a terrible season. I’ll take full responsibility for that.”

“Looking forward, first off no promises. We’re going to have a team now. I think we’ll have the potential,” Ryan said, smiling with a pause, “to do great things.”

Ah, Rex. He couldn’t help himself. Anyway, why the ridicule for old Rexy? Well, most coaches just go to the podium and wait for questions to be asked, but in Rex fashion, he felt the need to run his mouth. He didn’t go as far as he normally did, but he got as close to the line as possible.
