Adam Sandler, star of the upcoming movie Jack and Jill (which looks absolutely dreadful by the way), was the featured guest on NFL Network’s Rich Eisen’s Thursday podcast, and he got to talking about a movie of his to be released next summer called I Hate you, Dad, that will feature none other than Jets head coach Rex Ryan in a role that he was born to play.

Ryan will play an inexpensive  Boston lawyer who just so happens to be a huge Patriots fan.  So basically he’s just playing himself, minus the lawyer part, right?

Ba-zing!

OK, so maybe I’m just busting Rex’s chops here.  His disdain for the Pats is well known, despite his belief that Bill Belichick is the best coach in the NFL, so the fact that he’s willing to play a New England fan, who talks about his fondness for QB Tom Brady, seems contrary to Ryan’s normal thought process, which means this may actually be a funny bit.

Whaddya know?  Something humorous in an Adam Sandler movie made after Happy Gilmore.  Hey, stranger things have happened.

Says Sandler about Ryan’s master thespianism….

“He’s my lawyer,” Sandler told Eisen. “My character . . . is kind of a dirtbag guy and he’s in trouble. Rex is an inexpensive lawyer in town. He takes care of me. He’s also a mammoth Patriots fan in the movie.”

“We wrote it in the script,” Sandler said. “He was great enough to be loose and funny about it. He talks about (Tom) Brady. He talks about Coach Belichick. He’s really cool.” “I saw him in the hotel in the morning going to the set,” Sandler said. “I saw Coach running lines with two nice girls that work for the Jets. Just seeing the coach in the lobby doing his lines and memorizing them, closing his eyes. Then he put on a suit. Kind of a goofy suit. And he did great. . . . He did nail it.”
Wait, did Adam Sandler refer to Ryan as a “mammoth” Patriots fan?  Is it jsut me, or soes that sound like a shot at the coach’s ample girth?  Ahh, it’s all in good fun.  At least he didn’t force a foot joke in there somewhere, like some two-bit, sports blogger. This isn’t Ryan’s first foray into acting, as he and Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum had cameos in an episode of CSI: New York, but this is obviously a major stretch from playing yourself.  It’ll be interesting to see how well Ryan can pull this off, and whether any of the Jets faithful have a problem with their head coach playing a rabid Patriots fan.
