Reports have it as the Texas Rangers are very interested in Rick Porcello, as of 10 other teams who came to watch him pitch 4 innings of shutout ball today against the Houston Astros. He's looked better than the past two seasons, with his velocity consistently hitting 95-96 on the gun and his sinker and change up having much more movement. The free agent market was vary scarce this offseason leaving holes at the bottom of many organizations rotations. Lohse is a free agent liability for 3 reasons. 1) 1st round draft pick is lost 2) Age 3) cost and years he wants. Porcello has been seen as the best option due to Smyly's emergence in the Tigers organization and the upside with Porcello's age and innings logged in the majors. Jurickson Profar is seen as Opening Day ready, leaving the Rangers to decide on what to do with Elvis Andrus. It makes sense for Detroit to go after Andrus. He's 25 years old, fast, and a good contact hitter. He'd bring a fluctuation to Detroit's lineup at the 2 spot in the lineup and have Torii Hunter hit behind Martinez. Now what it would take to get Andrus to Detroit wouldn't be a 1 for 1 deal. Detroit would have to give up a prospect or even Peralta. It'd make sense for Texas to go after Garcia or Tyler Collins. Garcia is similar in body type to Nelson Cruz and could fit in as the LF. On the other hand, Collins is like a Dirks with a more powerful bat. Dombrowski is the genius behind these kind of deals and its getting closer to Opening Day with Peralta not hitting too hot so far this Spring.
