Jorge De La Rose pitched seven solid innings, catcher Yorvit Torrealba completed a remarkable double play by tagging out two runners and Colorado Rockies hung on to beat the San Diego Padres 4-2 Wednesday.
Corey Dickerson doubled twice, tripled and drove in two runs. Troy Tulowitzki had two hits and a pair of RBIs as Colorado completed a 5-1 homestand.
De La Rosa (12-6) allowed two runs on eight hits in running his record in eight day-game starts this season to 6-0 with a 1.57 ERA. He struck out six and walked one.
Rex Brothers pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save.
Andrew Cashner (8-7) gave up three runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked none.
De La Rosa was laboring to hold a one-run lead in the sixth after giving up a leadoff single to Jedd Gyorko, throwing a wild pitch and surrendering a single to Jesus Guzman, putting runners at first and third with none out.
Logan Forsythe hit a grounder to third and Gyorko broke for home. Third baseman N...

Colorado Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba turned an extremely unusual double play when he tagged two runners out by himself on the same play - at third base, no less - during Wednesday's game at Coors Field.
It happened in the top of the sixth inning with the San Diego Padres having runners on first and third with nobody out.
Jeff Manship was asked to make another start for the Rockies.Jeff Manship was given an opportunity to pitch in an emergency situation last Thursday in New York. He pitched five decent innings, enough to give the Colorado Rockies confidence to let him get another start.Or was it because the Rockies had no option?Either way, the Rockies had Manship on the hill for his second start...
Baseball in Colorado is coming to an end. The Colorado Rockies 2013 season is facing extinction. Sure the Rockies have six weeks left in their season, and yes, there is likely going to be a Todd Helton Night to send the future Hall of Famer into retirement the right way. But let’s face it. America’s pastime recedes into the shadows of football in September. The Broncos are...
Look out Hollywood, there’s a new star on the rise and he’s coming out of Tucson. The Tucson Padres’ own self-proclaimed anti-hero and writer/director/producer/actor Cody Decker (who also plays outfield for the Triple-A club) has put together a new short film entitled “Brad” starring himself and several members of the Padres clubhouse staff down in Tucson.
The movie, made...
Remember Jorge De La Rosa's critics? Good luck finding them now.Remember Ramon Ramirez? Some Colorado Rockies fan do. With all due respect to the right-handed middle reliever, there isn't a single Rockies fan who wants him back on the team. Why bring up Ramirez? When he showed up to spring training out of shape in 2008, Dan O'Dowd shipped him to the Kansas City Royals...
It'll take something greater than stomach trouble, to keep Michael Cuddyer out of the lineup for too long. Despite suffering from the effects of a virus that had left him bedridden the day before, the veteran marched into manager Walt Weiss's office prior to Tuesday's game intent on playing.
Though he was only successfully in coaxing a pinch hitting appearance out...
It’s probably a bit early to objectively assess the performance of Friars GM Josh Byrnes to this point in his tenure. After all, he didn’t join the franchise until December of 2010 and wasn’t named the club’s GM until nearly a year afterwards. To be fair Byrnes probably deserves another year or two before he can be judged. That being said, it’s not too early to grade one...
The T-Pads and the Missions both enjoyed victories tonight. Tucson’s Cody Decker hit a walk off home run while San Antonio’s Matt Wisler delivered an excellent start. Both Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne lost close games by 1 run. The Emeralds were blown out.

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Matt Wisler

Cameron Maybin’s rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson has been temporarily stopped.
“Technically we pulled him off the rehab to give his knee a few days to calm down” Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said Monday.
Maybin hasn’t appeared in a game for Tucson since last Thursday when he came out after two at-bats. He had played in only five of a possible 11 games when he...
Carlos Quentin has not played in a game since July 30 and the San Diego Padres are very concerned about the condition of his right knee. So much, in fact, that they left him have a second opinion on it Thursday.
As reported by Corey Brock of MLB.com, Quentin visited Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles for a second opinion. Quentin had surgery on his knee in October...
Friday night the Ted Williams (San Diego) Chapter of SABR hosted the Padres Memorable Moments event at the Scripps Ranch Library. As you may remember from reading about it here and here, Bob Chandler was to call the memorable moments in the old-style of sound effects and ticker tape.
In the library auditorium a stage was set up. On the left was a desk with all the special effects...
The Padres ended up losing to Colorado 4-2 yesterday. They had baserunners, got some timely hits for once, but couldn’t break on top. One particularly painful sequence occurred in the top of the sixth inning, when singles by Jedd Gyorko and Jesus Guzman placed runners on the corners and no one out. Logan Forsythe strode to the plate.
Logan reached for a outside 2-2 pitch...
The Padres lost a laugher last night. The game quickly got out of hand as Edinson Volquez couldn’t pitch yet again in Coors Field. This will be good to know for the Rockies once Volquez becomes a free agent. He gave up five early runs and that was enough for the Rockies to win. He left the game in the fifth inning after allowing eight runs, all of them earned.

Sometimes it’s tough to be a Padres fan. After Monday night’s game, which had a rain delay in the 8th inning despite the home team Colorado Rockies being up by 7 runs, I started thinking about strange things that have happened at Padres games I’ve been to or watched.
The idea started out as a list with a possible poll included. Then I realized that a list with only a couple...
