Colorado Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt could be back closing games within a week after throwing 30 pitches to teammates prior to Friday night's game against the Washington Nationals. Thomas Harding of MLB.com writes that Betancourt, recovering from a groin strain, was pleased with his ability to throw off-speed pitches during the session. "With the breaking ball and the changeup, you have to stay back a little bit longer than the fastball," Betancourt said. "I was able to throw every pitch today, and I didn't feel anything." Betancourt is scheduled to face live hitters again during the Rockies' road trip in Boston, then hopes to be activated soon after the team returns home on Thursday to face the New York Mets. The 38-year-old has been on the DL since the start of the month after failing to recover from a groin strain. In Betancourt's absence, Rex Brothers has been closing for the Rockies and his outstanding performance has continued. He has not given up an earned run in June, picking up two saves and giving up just two hits in 7.1 innings. In fact, Brothers has given up just one earned run in 34 appearances in 2013, although he has walked 4.6 batters per nine and will surely not continue with a 0% home run rate all season, especially pitching in home-run friendly Coors Field. The Rockies have not said whether Betancourt will slot back in to the closer's role straight away. Follow @mlbinjurynews Looking for fantasy baseball advice?
