The Kansas City Royals have signed Jeremy Guthrie to a three-year $25mm deal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Guthrie will make $5mm in 2013, $11mm in 2014 and $9mm in 2015.
Last offseason, the Orioles traded Guthrie to the Rockies where he struggled mightily, posting a 6.35 ERA in 19 starts with a career low 4.5 K/9. Then in July, the Rockies trade Guthrie to the Royals for next to nothing.
But in Kansas City, Guthrie was able to work with pitching coach Dave Eiland and saw his ERA cut in half to 3.16 in 14 starts with a 5.5 K/9. The big difference was that Guthrie allowed almost 4 less hits per nine in Kansas City (12.1 compared to 8.3).
Guthrie was all smiles when the deal was announced this morning as he stated, “I’m excited for this team. It was a big factor in wanting to return. If we pitch well, we will win a lot of games. Kansas City defense was as good as I have ever pitched in front of.”
