Ryan Hollweg was last spotted in the NHL during the 2008-09 season. Now, as an injury strewn Coyotes team prepares for their second straight playoff run, Hollweg has been called upon to make an impact in the NHL again.
The left winger began his NHL career in with the NY Rangers, where he was drafted 238th overall in the 2001 entry draft. In his time in NY, Hollweg established himself as a tough, gritty player who would stand up for himeself and his teammates. In July of 2008, Hollweg was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. In Toronto, Hollweg continued and accepted his intimidating role. Hollweg has played in 227 regular season NHL games, and during his NHL career Hollweg has scored 5 goals and has 9 assists.
Hollweg knows he isn’t supposed to be a scorer though. He is well aware that his role is to bring energy to the game through delivering huge hits that bring the fans and the bench to their feet.
The Coyotes called up Hollweg in an emergency situation a week ago. He has played 2 games with the team and is already making his mark. For his NHL comeback, he is sporting long, flowing brown hair and a mustache any cowboy would be jealous of. In postgame interviews he remains humble and thankful to be playing in the “show” again. Hollweg has worked very hard in the minors to fine-tune his game, and the work is paying off.
“I’m probably not going to get a lot of minutes so I have to make the best of my minutes when I’m out there and make sure that I’m noticed,” Hollweg commented. He will get noticed if he continues to bring energy and helps spark the Coyotes on a deep playoff run.
