There are many who feel the United States’ goaltending job at the 2014 Winter Olympics is Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick‘s to lose. Then there’s Ryan Miller who’s coming into this thing under the impression the job is anyone’s to win. Team USA kicked off its Olympic orientation camp Monday in Virginia, and Miller — who was between the pipes for the 2010 silver medalists in Vancouver — was a popular person. The Sabres goalie has been the face of American hockey, at least in net, but it may be time for Quick to take over as the No. 1 when the Americans get going in Sochi. However, Miller isn’t ready to give up the job just yet. Miller told reporters Monday that the job is still “wide open,” an obvious indication of how Miller is feeling with the NHL season just about a month away. The 33-year-old Miller certainly is no stranger to the international game. He went 5-1 in 2010 with his only loss the gold medal game overtime heart-breaker against Canada. He posted a 1.35 goals against average and a .946 save percentage. Miller also has international experience in the world championships. Quick, meanwhile, is a 27-year-old just coming into his prime. The 2012 Conn Smythe winner is one of the best goalies in the game right now, but the Sochi Games would be he his first international competition.
