San Jose State baseball coach Sam Piraro retires

San Jose State baseball coach Sam Piraro is retiring after 25 seasons with the university. Piraro thanked the school Wednesday for the opportunity and said he has been ''extremely honored'' to coach the Spartans. He says he's looking forward to spending more time with his wife, JoAnn, and ''do things that we have not previously been able to do.'' The 60-year-old Piraro leaves San Jose State with an 806-632-6 record and the most wins in school history. He guided the Spartans to 18 winnings seasons, three Western Athletic Conference championships - the last coming in 2009 - and the College World Series in 2000. He also coached at Mission College in nearby Santa Clara from 1980-86. Associate head coach Mark O'Brien will serve as the interim head coach.
