This news should not come as a shock, but Andrew Gross is reporting that Mike Sauer indeed has a concussion following the massive hit by Dion Phaneuf in the Rangers 4-2 loss on Monday night (video below). The hit was clean, but Sauer’s helmet came off and he hit his head on the boards, which is the likely cause of the concussion. John Tortorella has said that Sauer is day-to-day, but concussions are a tricky beast. Just ask Marc Staal. Paging Anton Stralman…

Dion Phaneuf Drops Huge Hit on Mike Sauer (Video)

The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the New York Rangers 4-2 last night.  Dion Phaneuf of the Maple Leafs dropped one of the biggest hits of the year on Ranger Mike Sauer.  Sauer's helmet went flying and he dropped like a bad habit.  He was somehow able to get up and off the ice on his own power.  This is precisely why Hockey is a mans game.  Big props to both players on the hit...

John Tortorella’s Very Brief Postgame Interview

… the happy Torts over the last dozen or so games was not the Torts that was at the postgame interview last night, rightfully so.  Rangers need to learn how to shut down Toronto, so far they are the only team in the league they are having a lot of trouble with.

Leafs' Phaneuf Crushes Rangers' Sauer With Huge Hit (w/ video)

During the third period of Monday night's game between the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs, Leafs' captian Dion Phaneuf leveled Rangers' defenseman Michael Sauer with a huge hit along the boards.  Sauer was pinching down from the point to keep the play alive and try to get the Rangers the tying goal when Phaneuf stepped up and destroyed him.  Sauer did not...

Tortorella pre-game presser

John Tortorella spoke about Michael Del Zotto’s progress, about what he expects from Anton Stralman tonight, and how his team has, for two seasons, dealt with injuries without being effected. Here is the pre-game press conference: John Tortorella:

Rangers D Sauer out with concussion

New York Rangers defenseman Mike Sauer has been listed as day-to-day due to a concussion. Sauer suffered the injury in Monday's game against Toronto when he took a shoulder check from the Maple Leafs' Dion Phaneuf. Sauer has already missed five games this season with a strained shoulder. He has a goal and two assists in 19 games.

Sauer's Absence Brings Tests, Opportunities For Rangers Defenders

The New York Rangers have been playing without one top-four defenseman all season as Marc Staal has been out of the lineup while trying to recover from a concussion.  The defense has held up better than most could have hoped, and while much of the credit has gone to Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh for elevating their games to another level, the contributions of Sauer on defense...

Rangers’ Sauer has concussion

Rangers coach John Tortorella confirmed what was expected. Defenseman Mike Sauer has been diagnosed with a concussion after taking a substantial hit from Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf in Monday’s 4-2 loss and will miss tonight’s home game against the Lightning. “I don’t know what grade,” Tortorella said...

Stralman Could Replace Injured Sauer

At some point today the Rangers will give us an update on the condition of Michael Sauer, who was forced to leave Monday's night's game against Toronto after taking a vicious hit by Maple Leaf Dion Phaneuf and hitting his head on the dasher.Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record says if Sauer has to miss tomorrow's game against the Lightning the Rangers will likely turn to...

Monday’s Three Stars: Panthers, Bruins rule; quality Phaneuf’ing

No. 1 Star: Stephen Weiss, Florida Panthers The Panthers veteran scored the first and last goals for his team, adding an assist in between during their 5-4 victory over the Washington Capitals. Weiss scored his 10th goal on the power play at 6:50 of the first, with Mike Santorelli scoring just 13 seconds later to make it 2-0. Weiss scored what would be the game-winning goal at...

Video: Torts a Fan of Girardi All Star Write-in Campaign

During his post practice press conference yesterday John Tortorella was asked about his thoughts on the Dan Girardi All Star write-in campaign. Here's what he said (1:50 mark)... ...is it me or has the defunct Girardi campaign randomly picked up steam the last two days?...what a strange question to ask Torts. But the Rangers coach gave an inspiring answer. I really may get...

Rangers’ win streak ends at 5

At first glance, last night’s Rangers’ 4-2 defeat to the Maple Leafs at the Garden can be attributed to an especially slow start against an especially fast team. But a closer look reveals that questionable third-period coaching by John Tortorella contributed at least equally to the end of the...

It’s Go Time!

Game 25. First of three in four nights, and four in six. Rangers still one away from 2,500 all-time wins. Anton Stralman makes his second start as a Ranger, in place of injured Michael Sauer (concussion). Steve Eminger moves up to the second pair with Michael Del Zotto. Erik Christensen remains prucha’d. Henrik Lundqvist in goal. Otherwise, same lineup that lost a five...

Rangers Become Latest Victim of Concussion Epidemic

By Christopher Decker (@HockeyGuy_Chris) This is the year of the concussion. It has to be. It seems that almost as soon as the league cracked down on illegal head shots, the amount of head injuries has practically skyrocketed. Go figure. And it hasn’t all been the result of illegal checks to the head, either. Now, clean shoulder checks to the opposition are also causing concussions...
