At the conclusion of rookie mini-camp on Sunday, Seattle Head Coach Pete Carroll was obviously impressed by rookie quarterback Russell Wilson’s early performance. Carroll said Wilson will compete for the starting quarterback job in training camp.

"He showed us enough," said Carroll. "He's in the competition."

Those words don’t tell the whole story as Carroll went on to praise Wilson’s “terrific arm”, his preparation and understanding of the West Coast Offense according to RotoWorld.

The two other quarterbacks also competing for the Seattle starting job are last year’s starter Tarvis Jackson and newly-signed free agent Matt Flynn. Despite being Aaron Rodgers’ backup in Green Bay, Flynn presumably has the upper hand on Jackson.

Flynn, in fact, was one of the most coveted free agents this past winter. While appearing in five games with Green Bay last season, Flynn completed 67 percent of his 49 pass attempts and had a monster game against Detroit where he threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns.

Of course, that was with Green Bay’s receiving corps, and maybe Carroll throwing Wilson into the mix just helps keep the still inexperienced Flynn on an even keel. Carroll has been known to love open competition; perhaps he does sincerely believe in the thrill to compete and thinks Wilson has a legit chance to start.

Wilson shined last year at Wisconsin, leading the Badgers to the Rose Bowl. Seattle drafted Wilson in the third round, which was ahead of where many teams had him projected. The Seahawks didn’t mind selecting him there because, according to ESPN analyst Adam Schefter, Seattle loved Wilson so much they felt they had to have him.

Even if Wilson doesn’t win the starting job, Schefter thinks he can be a viable backup and make Jackson expendable.
