SF Giants: Tim Lincecum Is Finally A Millionaire

Posted February 12, 2010 on TimKash's Blog:

It's about damn time.

In the eleventh hour before their schedule hearing today, the Giants signed Tim Lincecum to a multi-year deal , though the terms haven't been disclosed just yet.

This settles the arbitration case where the two sides were $5 million apart. Lincecum wanted $13 million, San Fran wanted to give him $8 million.

The most amazing thing about all of this is Lincecum made only $650,000 bucks last year. That has to be the lowest salary for a Cy Young award winner since the first million dollar contract was signed by Nolan Ryan in 1979.

The rumor is Lincecum's new contract will be worth more than 10 times his old deal. Now that's a nice raise.

  • Finally this deal got done, and for the San Francisco Giants, I believe Tim Lincecum is worth every penny of this deal. Earlier, I thought since since both sides weren't willing to give an inch that eventually they would meet at the midpoint (somewhere in the range of $10.5-11 million). Let's take a few things into account here. Lincecum is the defending Cy Young Award winner the past 2 years. That is 2 more than most pitchers dream of in thier careers. Next, Lincecum is only 25 years old (or young), however you slice it, this kid as a freak as a pitcher. His velocity has dropped a tad but has helped him gain more command over all of his pitches. Three, he is still incredibly durable in terms of the number of innings he can pitch each game. The arguement on the other end comes because of his violent motion during his delivery. Good point, but remember that he is not the bionic man, he will break down like any other human being on the planet. Age will lead to wear and tear, but once that happens, all great pitchers learn to make adjustments to keep themselves at the top of thier pitching game. Good signing and look for Lincecum to make a serious push for a 3rd straight Cy Young Award. If that happens, he will be a first ballot hall of famer with no question about it.
