Head coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan spoke to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday. Here are a few topics that were touched on:
Alex Smith: Singletary confirmed that going into this upcoming season, Smith will be the starter. Singletary initially said that there might a chance that the 49ers might bring in another quarterback to challenge Smith for the job. Now it looks like the 49ers will focus all their energy in making Smith a successful stater.
Tony Pashos: The 49ers need to add depth and experience at the right tackle position and Pashos could be just the right guy to help them out. Even though Pashos finished the y ear injured, his experience in opening holes in Jacksonville is something that the 49ers are very aware of. Keeping Pashos on the team not only give the 49ers flexibility, but also gives them an added dynamic that they couldn't establish all of last season.
Uncapped year: In 2010's potential uncapped year, McCloughan confirmed that the team wouldn't change much of their philosophy. Even though there would be no limit to how much they can spend, McCloughan confirmed that the team's efforts next year were to maintain key players on the team to long-term contracts. Expect linebacker Patrick Willis, tight end Vernon Davis and safety Dashon Goldson to be in discussions about new contracts.
Free agency: Even though the team's priority is to keep the current playres under contract, the team will still be active in free agency. Cornerback Dunta Robinson is one particular player that if available, the 49ers might want to pursue next season. Given the team's struggles in the secondary, Robinson could be a very good fit.
Draft: Running back CJ Spiller is not out of the equation for the first round. If the team sees that his versatility in the backfield and his explosiveness as a special teamer could really benefit the team, the 49ers could very well draft him.
Safety Earl Thomas doesn't have a big body frame that the 49ers are looking for and doens't look to be a player the 49ers are looking for.
Winning division: Even though Kurt Warner has retired, Singletary believes that the team has to earn the division crown.
