Joe Girardi believes the Yankees finally have a lineup deep enough to outhit their suddenly porous pitching and they needed plenty of runs Friday night with still-slumping CC Sabathia on the hill. Alfonso Soriano and Ichiro Suzuki blasted two-run homers as the Yanks opened a critical 10-game home stand with an 8-5 win over the Orioles at the Stadium. They moved a half-game behind Baltimore and trail the A’s and Rays (Oakland beat Tampa Bay at home Friday night 4-3) by 4.5 games for one of the two wild-card spots in the American League. “We feel that our lineup is a lot deeper” Girardi said after the Yanks improved to 23-1 in games in which they’ve scored at least seven runs including 7-0 since Aug. 13. “Let’s get the pitchers right too. We have to click on all cylinders basically. “One night we may score eight runs and the next night we may not. That’s when the pitchers have to pick up the hitters.” Sabathia coughed up five runs in 5.2 innings marking the sixth time in nine starts he has allowed at least that many. But strong run support and stellar bullpen help — including Mariano Rivera’s 39th save — enabled the $191 million lefty to improve to 12-11 on the season despite a career-worst 4.91 ERA. “Unbelievable and that’s what I always talk about: if I can keep these guys in the game we have a good chance of winning” Sabathia said. “I was barely hanging on there but these guys come up with a bunch of runs.” Robinson Cano contributed two hits and two RBI in his return following a one-game absence as the Yankees clearly have little choice but to adopt an all-bruised-hands-on-deck mentality for the final month of the regular season.
