Thursday was an example of a Valentine's Day gone terribly wrong for Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius.Pistorius was charged with the murder of his girlfriend after he allegedly mistook her for an intruder inside his home in South Africa. According to reports, the national hero known as "Blade Runner" for his high-tech artificial legs, fatally shot model Reeva Steenkamp in the early morning hours. She was reportedly shot four times.Police said the 26-year-old male would appear in court later on Thursday on the charge of murder and that there had "previously been incidents at the home of Mr. Pistorius."Police spokesperson Denise Beukes did not immediately provide details on what occurred via the following statement: "It would be very premature and very irresponsible of me to say what actually has happened," Beukes said. "There have been allegations. We are not sure." Early media outlets reported that the murder may have been accidental. However, Beukes isn't ruling out the possibility of intent or foul play.Pistorius made history in London last year when he became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympic Games, which propelled him to the status of an athletics superstar. Having had both his legs amputated below the knee before his first birthday because of a congenital condition, he campaigned for years to be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes. Having initially been banned because of his carbon fiber blades, which critics said gave him an unfair advantage, he was allowed to run in top events beginning in 2008.Via USA Today
