Found January 24, 2012 on Fenway West:
As 1967 spring training approached, there was little Red Sox news. A headline read "No Peace Bid, says LBJ" (It did seem like the president would deny peace feelers before they were even made). In boxing, Cassius Clay, as he was still called in print, dealt challenger Ernie Terrell a crushing 15-round defeat, all the time taunting Terrell about refusing to call him Muhammed Ali. One interesting Sox article, written of course by Clif Keane, talked of Dick Williams' appearence at a booth in the Sportman and Boat Show at the War Memorial Building, now the Hynes Auditorium. Sox managers in the past had probably made perfunctory appearences, signing a few autographs and leaving. But Williams definitely made his presence felt. Dick stayed for over an hour, and did a lot more than sign autographs. Asked if he would come out of the dugout to argue calls,(Sox skippers in the past had been accused of sleeping through such moments). he replied: "I expect to be fighting for ...

Scutaro Deal Gives Red Sox Odd SS Platoon

Decent shortstops are hard to come by, but the Red Sox have now traded away two potential starters this offseason. After trading Jed Lowrie to the Astros for Mark Melancon, Ben Cherington and Company completed a deal this weekend to send Marco Scutaro to the Rockies for Clayton Mortensen and $6 million in salary relief. In each case the Red Sox dealt from depth to solidify perceived...

January 25, 2012: The Cody Ross Era Begins!

Holy Buckets! After so many years of stone-faced JD Drew, can I just tell you how nice it will be to have a passionate player manning right field? Yay! But can I just tell you how incredibly stupid I think it was for the Sox to trade Marco Scutaro, who would have made a measly $6 million dollars in 2012 to “free up payroll” Not only was he one of the most productive players...

Cody Ross Helps Fill Hole in Outfield, Enables Red Sox to Move Mike Aviles Back to Infield (Video)

The Red Sox did more than address an issue in their outfield by signing Cody Ross. NESN.com Red Sox beat reporter Didier Morais explains what the move means for the Red Sox in the video above. Have a question for Didier Morais? Send it to him via...

Your Morning Dump...where the next Nomar is never coming.

Your browser does not support iframes.  Every morning we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump... If you had to pick a position on the field to build a team around, shortstop is where most would start. Unless you’re the Red Sox. Then it’s more...

J.D. Drew Very Likely To Retire

Free agent outfielder J.D. Drew is "very likely" to retire, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman (on Twitter). It's been a quiet offseason for the Scott Boras client. Drew, 36, hit .222/.315/.302 in 286 plate appearances with the Red Sox last season. If he does retire, he'll do so as a .278/.384/.489 career hitter with 242 homers during his 14 years. The Scott Boras client has...

Another shortstop dilemma

There has been lots of talk lately about the revolving door of Red Sox shortstops since the early 2000's. Edgar Renteria had one terrible year. Alex Gonzales had two stints and both times refused to re-sign. Julio Lugo was a bad free-agent signing. And now Mario Scutaro, after two fairly productive years, is gone in a trade. A "Red Sox Beat" article in the Herald by...
