On Wednesday night, St. Louis Cardinals veteran starter Jake Westbrook had himself quite a game, pitching seven dominant innings in the Cardinals 11-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Westbrook struck out just two hitters and allowed nine hits, but he was able to navigate his way past the Phillies and allow the Cardinals offense to do some work. It was Westbrook’s seventh win of the year. Westbrook has been surprisingly solid this season for the Cardinals, although the 35-year old is very likely to be a free agent prior to next season and the timing of a great season could not be better. But Westbrook really has been spectacular and have been able to post an impressive 2.88 ERA despite a not so impressive 1.392 WHIP. So what has made Westbrook so successful? Here are three thoughts. 1. Westbrook is keeping the ball in the ballpark. Westbrook has allowed only three home runs all season long in 88.1 innings pitched, which is pretty damn impressive. Westbrook has limited the dam...

Cardinals fan has trouble retrieving foul ball

via Vine Major League Baseballs cost a whole $10 at the store, but some people treat them as they’re a retirement fund.  During Wednesday’s Phillies-Cardinals game, Joe Cardinalsfan had all kinds of trouble trying to gather a foul ball. His stone hands prevented him from grabbing it the conventional way by leaning over the wall.  Then his momentum took him over the wall onto...

St. Louis Cardinals: Carlos Beltran’s power outage is cause for concern

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny kept All-star right fielder Carlos Beltran out of the lineup for Thursday night’s 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Matheny has been doing this all season long. He has sat Beltran often and the 36 year old has often responded. Beltran put up a huge first half of the season, much like he did in 2012, and the Cardinals are trying...

Rzepczynski 'happy to be back' in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS -- Top pitching prospect Carlos Martinez's second trip to the majors lasted just two weeks after the Cardinals sent him back to Class AAA Memphis and called up lefty reliever Marc Rzepczynski Thursday. Martinez, who spent three weeks in the majors in May, made only three appearances this time up. He pitched well in two but, when called on to work the ninth with a 9...

Cards' RISP numbers are so good, they're ridiculous

ST. LOUIS -- The numbers the Cardinals are putting up with runners in scoring position have become ridiculous. Ridiculously good, that is. Like this good: At .340, the Cardinals' batting average with RISP leads the majors by 52 points. It's 80 points better than any other NL team. Their .411 on-base percentage is the majors' best by 46 points. If the Cardinals keep...

St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 Since All-Star Break

The St. Louis Cardinals have won 5 of their last 7 games since returning from the All-Star Game in New York. Granted, these series were more of a warm-up for the Cardinals, as both opponents have been struggling this year. After only losing game 2 in a 3 game series with the San Diego Padres, the Red Birds went on to dominate the Philadelphia Phillies in 3 games (4-1, 11-3, 3-1)...

Preview: Lynn, Cardinals go for sweep of Phillies

The St. Louis Cardinals have the best record in baseball, though Lance Lynn's recent struggles have helped prevent that mark from being even more impressive. He'll look to get back on track as St. Louis seeks to deal the visiting Philadelphia Phillies a fifth consecutive defeat in Thursday night's series finale. St. Louis (61-37) leads Pittsburgh by 1 12 games atop...

Cardinals unlikely to trade top prospects and other rumors

According to Bernie Miklasz, the Cardinals are unlikely to trade any of their top prospects, including Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez, Oscar Taveras and Kolten Wong.  For GM John Mozeliak to even consider trading any of his big 4 prospects, the deal would have to deliver an ace pitcher or a significant upgrade at short, neither of which is currently available on the trade market...

MLB trade rumors: A case to turn the Cardinals into sellers

(via CardinalsFarm.com) Buy low and sell high, right? Isn’t that a basic investment model? Isn’t the farm system and organization somewhat of an investment?  I am going to throw out an idea that may be unpopular for many St. Louis Cardinals fans, but it is at least worth a listen. The current market in baseball appears to be a seller’s market. With the unfortunate injury to Tim...
