It’s time to stop to talking about Northwestern football being good by Northwestern standards. The talk about what Pat Fitzgerald has done despite the limitations he has needs to end. There is no need for qualifying statements anymore. No more “given the…” It’s just Big 10 standards now plain and simple. This week should have taught you that Northwestern football has arrived to the point where you can hold them to the same standards as the rest of the teams in the conference. The Wildcats are not a bunch of cute, cuddly little kitties to be treated with kid gloves by the local and national. They have and have had for awhile, as good a collection of skill players as you’ll find anywhere in the Big ten. Being a big boy program means you get treated with the exact same standards and scrutiny as the other established college football teams. They’re not kittens. They’re man-eating lions. RAR RAR RAR. I understand where the soft coverage of Northwestern football comes from; I’ve learned my history now of what went on at Ryan Field in the 70s and 80s. However, now is the time to bury that history forever and move on. I was born in 1978; so that national record losing streak began long before I was even born. I’m too young to remember the abyss of the Dennis Green, Rick Venturi, Francis Peay etc. The only Northwestern football I’m old enough to know/remember is the Gary Barnett era and everything that has happened since. Therefore, Northwestern football being good is not a novelty to me. It’s expected. The older generations of fans and media need to accept the same truth. It’s not a story that Northwestern football competes with Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska etc. It’s time to beat them. There are no morale victories anymore in Evanston for covering the point spread. Venrick Mark was probably the most electric player on the field Saturday night, and he wore purple and black. Not scarlet and grey. And that night saw Northwestern football broke its single-game records for both ticket and merchandise revenue. Which tells you it’s time to stop patting NU on the back for simply being on the national stage; it’s time to win on a national stage. It reminds me of when a girl tries to win me over by saying that she likes sports. Or when meathead idiots declare a female journalist their “dream woman because she’s hot and she loves sports.” There’s nothing special or exotic about that. It’s not a rare breed of human being. I grew up women sports fans, reporters etc. We do need many more women in the press box and the broadcast booth, but we shouldn’t give exalted status to the ones who are there already. No need to applaud female sports fans for liking the games. I grew up with this. I’m used to it. Likewise no need to deify Pat Fitzgerald for making Northwestern football nationally relevant. They’ve been to five straight bowl games, have you not been paying attention? Northwestern football is good. I know. I grew up with this. I’m used to it. Paul M.
