Tony Stewart turned a lap around Atlanta Motor Speedway in 29.787 seconds on Friday to claim the pole for Sunday night’s AdvoCare 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the track. After his lap, Stewart was quick to credit Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Ryan Newman. “That lap is 100 percent due to Ryan Newman,” Stewart said. “If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t be on the pole, probably.” Stewart said that after Newman made his run, he walked over to Stewart to tell him the best way around the race track. Obviously, the advice from the seven-time Atlanta pole sitter worked. Greg Biffle turned in a 29.863-second lap to claim the provisional pole starting position for a time, but after being knocked from the top of the scoring pylon by Stewart, Biffle will start second on Sunday, but still on the front row. “It was quite a bit better than practice was,” Biffle said of the handling of his car from practice to qualifying. “It sort of hurts, though, to qualify second like we did today.” Other ...
