Strikeforce Womens Champion Cristiane Cyborg Santos

“Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal” took place Saturday night inside the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California. Despite having a pair of championship affairs headline the Showtime broadcast, the card didn’t garner much hoopla.

One would think Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (Pictured) doesn’t like being in the hexagon all that much. The women’s reigning featherweight queen ended her 18-month hiatus by easily disposing of Hiroko Yamanaka in the night’s co-featured contest. It took Cyborg all of 16 seconds to collect her 11th consecutive victory.

Although it wasn’t the most thrilling scrap of the evening, lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez managed to take home a unanimous decision win over Jorge Masvidal to retain his title in the main event.

Results (Play-by-Play):

Preliminary Bouts:

Herman Terrado Defeated Chris Brown via Submission (Armbar) at 4:05 in the 3rdRound

Eddie Mendez Defeated Fernando Gonzalez via Split Decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)

Devin Cole Defeated Gabriel Salinas-Jones via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Roger Bowling Defeated Jerron Peoples via TKO (Punches) at :42 in the 1stRound

Caros Fodor Defeated Justin Wilcox via KO (Punches) at :13 in the 1stRound

Main Bouts:

K.J. Noons Defeated Billy Evangelista via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Gegard Mousasi Defeated Ovince St. Preux via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos Defeated Hiroko Yamanaka via KO (Strikes) at :16 in the 1stRound (Cyborg retains Strikeforce women’s featherweight title)

Gilbert Melendez Defeated Jorge Masvidal via Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-45, 49-46) (Melendez retains Strikeforce lightweight title)

Post-Fight Press Conference Notes:

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker referred to Cyborg as the Mike Tyson of female MMA.

Gegard Mousasi felt he should have done better in the final round against Ovince St. Preux. He blamed it on not taking training as seriously as he should have.

Melendez arrived at the presser with a busted up right eye.

Although Melendez requested for the UFC lightweight champ to enter his hexagon, “El Niño” said the comment was made off adrenaline. He is confident Strikeforce will locate formidable challengers in the near future.

Masvidal believes he took at least two rounds from Melendez.

Melendez knows he’s one of the world’s best 155-pounders, but he will no longer say anything about it. He intends to walk the walk instead of talking the talk.

Coker and Showtime plan on meeting before their January 7th card to map out their 2012 schedule.

For what it’s worth, Coker claimed the Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal vs. Lorenz Larkin scrap will have light heavyweight title implications.

KJ Noons and Billy Evangelista agreed not to take each other down and exchange in the final minutes of their shootout.

Strikeforce weigh-in: With title fights official, is Masvidal focused?

The craziest weight class miss in recent memory was the only notable highlight of the Strikeforce weigh-in earlier today. Jerron Peoples knew he was nowhere close to welterweight limit of  170 pounds, so his camp negotiated with Roger Bowling's to meet at 179. Incredibly enough, Peoples still missed the super high catchweight. He weighed 180.5 and couldn't get down to 179...
