We’re only in the first days of May, but Miguel Cabrera appears primed for a run at another Triple Crown. The Detroit Tigers’ superstar third baseman went 4-for-4 with two homers and six RBI in a 17-2, Saturday night rout of the Houston Astros. With that effort, Cabrera boosted his average to a league-leading .390, took over the top spot in the RBI race with 36 and bumped his homer total to six. Cabrera’s four hits were just part of the Tigers’ 21-hit outburst against the downtrodden Astros. Torii Hunter also had four hits, while Austin Jackson, Victor Martinez, Jhonny Peralta, Alex Avila and Omar Infante had two each. Martinez bombed his first homer of the year in the ninth. Max Scherzer was the beneficiary of the offensive output, though he turned in a gem of his own. Scherzer allowed three hits in eight innings, plus struck out eight to move to 4-0. Tigers’ MVP: Cabrera. This guy is absurd. Somehow, he’s flown a bit under the radar thus far in 2013 … and he is on pace for ridiculous totals this season. Having Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez behind him have helped, but Cabrera has constantly come to the dish with runners on base, thanks to Jackson, Hunter and, to a lesser extent, Infante. Tigers’ Goat: Uh … Al Alburquerque? Fielder had the shakiest day at the plate of the Tigers’ starters, starting 0-for-4 before delivering an RBI single. Alburquerque allowed a run in the ninth — hardly a problem at that point. It’s tough to pass any blame around in a 15-run win. Checking the Standings: The Tigers’ third straight win (and eighth in their last nine games) kept them a half-game up on the Royals in the AL Central. What’s Next: Can Detroit close out the four-game sweep? The Astros will need to knock off Justin Verlander on Sunday if they’re going to avoid that fate.
