ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday that former San Francisco 49ers receiver Ted Ginn Jr. will sign a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers. Ginn Jr. spent the last three season with in San Francisco, but only had two receptions last season, with the team opting to give kickoff returns to rookie LaMichael James late in the season. Ginn's true worth was as a punt returner. He was 11th in the league in punt-return average (11.2 yards) in 2012. Ginn had a big 32-yard punt return in the Super Bowl, which set up a touchdown. "The interesting thing about Ted is he gives us some depth at wide receiver who can challenge for playing-time opportunity," Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday at the NFL Annual Meeting, according to Sports World Report's Lauren Moranor, via NFL.com. "But also, he's got special-teams value, which is big. He's an explosive guy coming off the line of scrimmage, too." "So there's some huge pluses for us as far as hoping to be able to bring a guy like that into the fold." var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});
