He may not have been their first option or even among their Top 5, but the University of Tennessee made the right choice when they hired Cincinnati Bearcats coach Butch Jones as the 23rd head coach in the history of Tennessee football. When Derek Dooley was fired on November 18th, immediate speculation surrounded Monday Night Football host Jon Gruden as the favorite replacement. While Vols fans constantly refreshed Twitter and message boards for any news linking Gruden to Tennessee, many outsiders never thought it was a remote possibility. It turns out they were right, after a few short weeks Gruden informed Tennessee Athletic Director Dave Hart he was not interested in the job. Hart and the Volunteer faithful immediately turned their attention towards two names. Louisville coach Charlie Strong and Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy. Gundy invited Dave Hart to his home, but it turned out to just be leverage to help Gundy get a raise from Oklahoma State. The attention turned to Strong a...

Don’t Take Charlie Strong’s Comments About Fan Support Personal

I think all Louisville fans were a little surprised to hear Charlie Strong’s comments on Monday afternoon about the lack of fan support. I know there is a percentage of the fan base that agrees with what Strong said about the lack of support; however there is also a percentage that can’t get past his comment about the “Big Blue Nation.” Let’s be honest. Using Louisville’s...

Tennessee Settles for Butch Jones

Maybe the term "settles" is a little harsh but when your other candidates were Jon Gruden, Mike Gundy and Charlie Strong, it fits. By settling, it doesn't necessarily mean that this is a bad hire. In fact, I like this hire more than the last two that the Vols have made. Of course, the last two hires were Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley so I'm not sure that's saying...

Tennessee now aiming for Cincinnati's Butch Jones.

The saga to find the replacement for Derek Dooley continues as Tennessee is now reportedly setting their lowered expectations on Cincinnati head football coach Butch Jones to be the Vols' new HC. This after Jon Gruden, Mike Gundy, and Charlie Strong turned the school down. Jones has already been headhunted by both Purdue and Colorado, with  no success. It seems there might...

Tennessee still looking for coach

What is going on in Knoxville? What should have been one of the best coaching jobs in the country has turned into an episode of the Bachelorette with nobody accepting the rose. Tennessee is currently 0-4 in selecting a replacement for Derek Dooley. The Volunteers aren't desperate yet, but the recruiting clock is ticking and the more people who turn them down, the more awkward...

Chryst Staying: Do We Care Why?

I’m only now home and with some time to sit down and post on what is old news: Pitt will have the same coach from the regular season coach the team in Birmingham. Something that is actually unique for the program. The buzz last night and at the start of the morning was that it looked like Chryst wasn’t leaving Pitt. The message he and his assistants were getting out to the 2013...
