As a lifelong Arizona Cardinals fan of 40 years (including their time in St. Louis); I couldn't help to think - have the Cardinals started 3-0 ever in my lifetime?

The Arizona Cardinals defeated the New England Patriots in Foxboro, Ma today 20-18.  The Cardinals were led by a fierce defensive effort that held the potent Patriots offense to 1 touchdown and were gifted a missed field goal attempt by Stephen Gostkowski from 42 yards with 5 seconds remaining.

Thanks to the Polish Shankapotamus (Gostkowski), the Cardinals are 2-0 to start the NFL season for the first time since 2008.  The Cardinals have the opportunity to start a season 3-0 for the first time since 1974 against the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday in Glendale, AZ.

The  1974 St. Louis Cardinals were led by Jim Hart, Mel Gray and Roger Wehrli.

Remember them?

The Cardinals played their football games at the old Busch Stadium in St. Louis on astro turf under the Bidwill family ownership group.

The field was 100 yards long.

1974, the last time the football Cardinals started 3-0, was the year former Phoenix Suns favorite Steve Nash, Yankee great Derek Jeter and stunt artist Steve-O were born.

In 1974, break dancing wasn't popular, I-anything wasn't available, and the price of gas was 55 cents per gallon.

If the Cardinals were to start the season 3-0, they would have a distinct opportunity to run their record to 7-0* heading into a Monday football contest against the San Francisco 49ers on October 29, 2012.

The last time the Cardinals started 7-0?

Until Next Time,

Craig Turley

*After next weekends Philadelphia game at home, the Cardinals play Miami (H), St. Louis (A), Buffalo (H), Minnesota (A).

Stephen Gostowski's Value to Patriots Far Greater Than Embarrassment of Missed Kick

Stephen Gostkowski lined up for a 57-yard field goal during warm ups on Sunday afternoon and he sent the ball sailing right on through the uprights. With a career long of just 53 yards, which he tied on Sunday, Gostkowski was expectedly ecstatic. About four hours later and 15 yards closer, the ever reliable Gostkowski was face down on the turf at Gillette Stadium filled with very...

Cardinals: Gostkowski was ‘scared’ of field goal block

The Cardinals came into New England today as one of the largest underdogs this week and shocked Patriots fans the world over with a hard fought 20-18 victory. New England had a shot at the end to win it with a fairly standard field goal from 42 yards out, but it was not to be as Stephen Gostkowski pushed the kick wide left and the Cardinals escaped with a crucial road win. After...

25 NSFW ‘Patriots Fans Wishing Stephen Gostkowski Would Die’ F-Bomb Tweets

Is there a worse fan base in the NFL than Patriots fans? Obviously the Raiders are in the running, but Patriots fans are a different kind of awful. Just snobby, entitled d-bags who are never satisfied. Yesterday is a perfect example. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed a 42-yard field goal, causing the Pats to lose to the lowly Cardinals at home. Gostkowski has been one of the most...

Patriots vs. Cardinals Recap: Five Plays That Led To A Loss

Gostkowski’s missed FG with seconds remaining was just one of the ways the Patriots lost Sunday. Last week in our recap of the Patriots’ victory over the Titans I made a foolish statement. Overlooking the Cardinals I called this game a “tune-up” for the mega match-up with the Ravens. Shame on me. Perhaps the Patriots shared a similar sentiment too, as the team looked sluggish...

Arizona has won 9 of 11 after upset at New England

The day-after enthusiasm for one of the Arizona Cardinals' biggest road victories ever was subdued at team headquarters. The players and their coach understand too well how close that one was, but the 20-18 triumph at New England, secured when the Patriots' Stephen Gostkowski missed a 42-yard field goal with one second to play, fits a pattern for this resurgent Arizona franchise...

A Patriots “One of those games” turns into a Patriots nightmare

Stephen Gostkowski missed the game winning field goal, but the Patriots never deserved to win the game anyway The mood at our table at Buffalo Wing University in Fairfax, Virginia could only be described as “tense”. After numerous missed opportunities including dropped balls, failures by eligible receivers to get open down the field and missed blocks all along the offensive line...

Monday Musings: Observations and notes from week 2

I’ve already covered the play that most sticks out in my mind from yesterday’s slate of games here, but, there were a few other things I noticed.  For starters, it was another unpredictable week… at least for me. I lost more than my share of wagers and managed just 7/15 success on straight picks, my [...]

Patriots shocked in home opener

After being perfect 4 times before in this game, Gostkowski couldn’t deliver when it mattered most. This was supposed to be an easy win for the New England Patriots, even the most die hard Arizona Cardinals fans thought this game would be a blowout. It wasn’t a blowout, it wasn’t a hard fought Patriots victory, the Patriots didn’t even win on a game ending field goal, it...

Cardinals win wild one over Patriots

Backup quarterback Kevin Kolb threw for one touchdown and ran for another, Stephen Gostkowski missed a potential winning field goal in the final seconds, and the Arizona Cardinals upset the New England Patriots 20-18 on Sunday. The Patriots took over when Vince Wilfork recovered a fumble at the Cardinals 30-yard line with 1:01 left. A 30-yard run into the end zone by Danny Woodhead...

Week 2 Fantasy Football Recap: Cardinals vs Patriots

Arizona Cardinals @ New England PatriotsIn a, "what just happened?" fashion, the New England Patriots watched Stephen Gostkowski hook a game winning 42-yard field goal to the left as the Cardinals went on to upset the Patriots 20-18. Tom Brady was hurried more than he is comfortable with and the Patriots offense could not establish a rhythm. The game also had fantasy relevance...

Cardinals survive late turnover to upset Patriots

FOXBORO, Mass. – No one had to tell the Arizona Cardinals they dodged a major bullet Sunday. But, as they say, a win is a win is a win. "It feels so good to have this victory right now," safety James Sanders, a former Patriot, said after Stephen Gostkowski missed a 42-yard field goal with one second left, allowing the Cardinals to escape with a 20-18 victory over...
