Found May 02, 2012 on The "Mc" Effect:
The Pirates are now 10-13 on the season. They are 1-3 against the St. Louis Cardinals after dropping a 10-7 decision last night. I took a look at the Cardinals schedule so far this year and was surprised by what I saw.

The defending World Series champs opened the season with a one game series in Miami. They won that game 4-1. Since then, they have played all National League Central teams. That's right. Here's there schedule thus far, all series have been three games sets since the Marlins game.

4/6-4/8 @ Brewers (won 2)
4/9-4/11 @ Reds (won 2)
4/13-4/15 vs. Cubs (won 2)
4/17-4/19 vs. Reds (won 2)
4/20-4/22 vs. Pirates (won 2)
4/23-4/25 @ Cubs (won 1)
4/27-4/29 @ Brewers (won 2)

The Cardinals are the only team in the Central to have a winning record. Now obviously that has something to do with them beating everybody else, but it's not secret that the Central is a pretty weak division. The Reds are 7-3 in their last 10 and are playing better baseball, the Brewers have a solid team all the way around, but nobody in this division wows you and all the teams have their holes.

For right now, it would seem that the Cardinals are an easy pick to win the division and contend for a championship again, but I think we need to hold off on that until we see them play some better teams. This month the Cardinals have the Pirates, Astros, Diamondbacks, Braves, Cubs, Giants, Dodgers, Padres, and Phillies, so things are going get a little bit tougher. Hopefully they'll scuffle a bit and we can get back to thinking that the Pirates could win this division with 90 wins or so.

Sorry for using "Pirates" and "win the division" in the same sentence, but I gotta say it... it could happen.

How rare is a stolen base by a Cardinals pitcher?

In the second inning of Thursday’s St. Louis Cardinals game, the club had two stolen bases. The first bag wasn’t much of a surprise, as it was swiped by Tyler Greene. After all, the infielder led the club in 2011 with 11. Two batters later, however, both Pittsburgh pitcher Erik Bedard and catcher Mike McKenry had to be stunned with Cardinals hurler Jake Westbrook took second...

Beltran busts out of slump with huge night

ST. LOUIS Slumping outfielder Carlos Beltran walked off the field after batting practice Wednesday and stopped to tell reporters how he felt lost at the plate. He also had a prediction. "Sooner or later it will change," Beltran said. "There's nothing to worry about." About four hours later, Beltran proved himself to be right. The veteran went 4-for-5,...

Cardinals to retire La Russa's No. 10

The St. Louis Cardinals are wasting no time honoring Tony La Russa, announcing they will retire their former manager's No. 10 later this month. La Russa retired last fall after leading the franchise to a second World Series title in his 16 seasons. He left the game ranked third all time in managerial victories, trailing Connie Mack and John McGraw. The jersey will be retired...

Fill-in Lynn continues stellar start with 5th win

ST. LOUIS Lance Lynn may not be Chris Carpenter, but he's pitching about as good as the former Cy Young winner ever has. Lynn continued a remarkable start to the year Wednesday night, becoming the first National League pitcher to reach five wins with 6 23 strong innings in the Cardinals 12-3 romp of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Moved to the rotation because of a nerve injury to...

Cardinals hit early to avoid shadows

The St. Louis Cardinals have started taking batting practice early to avoid late-afternoon shadows. Manager Mike Matheny said Wednesday that players can get a better read on the ball and get comfortable with their swing if the visibility is better. So the team began its hitting drills more than three hours before playing the Pittsburgh Pirates. Lance Berkman, on the 15-day disabled...

Kyle Lohse Revisited

Back in February I discussed St Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse, and how his ability to command his curve ball might define his season.  Lohse just finished April 4-0 for the Cardinals; how is his curve ball working for him? Through five starts Lohse’s velocity on all his pitches is within .5 MPH of what he was throwing last year, except with his change-up; interestingly that’s...

Cardinals add Allen Craig, drop Erik Komatsu

The St. Louis Cardinals get a key hitter back, but give up their Rule 5 selection in the process.

Can the offense keep going?

After last night's offensive outburst, the New Lumber Company moves on to St. Louis to take on Adam Wainwright. Wainwright got off to an awful start this year in his return from Tommy John surgery, but he was pretty excellent in his last start against the Cubs. The Bucs will counter with Charlie Morton, who's already seen the Cardinals once this year. The Cardinals mostly...

Pirates-Cardinals Preview

(AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals' Adam Wainwright enjoyed his best outing of the season last week, but that wasn't enough to give him his first win since returning from Tommy John surgery. The Party Gets More Packed With Craig Back

For all of the success the St. Louis Cardinals have had this year at the plate, they still have yet to do it with their optimal roster. Injuries have kept some guys that started the season out of the mix, while it has prevented several from getting a chance to get their spikes dirty at [...]

I’m not sure if it’s time to panic yet or not. Okay it isn’t. The pitching has gotten rocked as of late but before we bury these guys let’s remember that they have been very good for longer than they have been very bad.  Every pitcher has bad outing.  It happens. First Pitch: 1:45 PM [...]
