There is going to be plenty of debate over the coming off-season over whether Marvin truly is the man to take this franchise into the future and beyond merely making the playoffs. It is a debate worth having. If you belong to the anti-Marvin camp, you have plenty of ammunition to use as you make your case. But if your debate is centered around the 2013 season, you are wasting your breath. Marvin is under contract for next year, and there is no scenario that I can imagine where Mike Brown doesn’t stick with Marvin. If there is one thing more important to Mike than money, it’s continuity. Well, there is one scenario, actually. I wouldn’t call it probable, but it is one that I could get behind. We all know Marvin’s faults. I don’t need to list them. But I would consider his biggest strength to be the draft. The Bengals have have consistently had superior drafts over the past few years, and I attribute that to 1) outstanding evaluation by the crew that he has put together, and 2) Lewis’ amazing ability to minimize the influence of Mike Brown in the scouting and drafting process (which I am convinced he has somehow done). Isn’t that the foremost ability you want in a General Manager? Yes, I think Marvin is better suited to be the GM than the HC. Some fresh blood among the coaching staff could do the team some good. Maybe Zimmer takes over, or maybe Darrin Simmons. (At this point, there is no way I consider Gruden. I am shocked that other teams are still looking at him after his debacle in Houston.) But at the end of the day, I still believe ML will be wearing the headset in 2013.
