The Savannah State Tigers got paid nearly $1 million for an old fashioned thrashing---not once, but twice.  By now we know the story, in two straight weeks, the Tigers were clearly embarrassed getting outscored 139-0 to first Oklahoma State and then Florida State.

All for what?

The answer is simple.

The Athletic Director at the small historically black institution wanted to fatten their minuscule athletic department’s budget.

I get it, two guaranteed paydays but at what cost?  How do you think those young men felt going into Stillwater giving up 84 points and then the following week traveling to Tallahassee and giving up 55?

One word . . . HUMILATED!

Savannah State’s Athletic Director Sterling Steward needs to be fired.  Period! He even had the bold nerve to say that he would schedule two top flight FBS schools every year for this payout.  Is he crazy?  I tell you what, why doesn’t he suit up in football equipment and run out of the tunnel at Doak Campbell Stadium and see what it feels like to be bullied for 60 minutes.

No coach or player deserves to be humiliated like this.  The Tigers felt this humiliation twice in back to back weeks.

My question is, will any of these football players that laid it on the line to get smacked silly for two weeks see any proceeds for their efforts?  Will they travel in style?  Will they stay in a nicer hotel?  Will their facilities or stadium get a mega face lift so that they can feel proud of being a Savannah State Tiger?  The answer is No!  It sickens me to my stomach.

I played at a FCS school Alabama State University and although my teammates and I talked about how we would stack up against Alabama, Auburn or any other SEC team, deep down, we knew it wouldn’t be close.  I mean, if we couldn’t beat Troy State (was a FCS school then), how could we think we could line up against Alabama?

I urge all FCS schools to not play these big time schools for a huge payout.  The powers that be that run these small schools don’t weigh the good vs. the bad.  Sure, the money is good and it really helps the athletic department, but what about the players that have to play in those games?

What about their egos?  Their mental psych?  How does this help for recruiting?  It doesn’t, and I think it only made matters worse.

No player would want to be a lamb being led to a slaughter week in and week out.  It’s not like Savannah State is a premier FCS school.  They have lost 72 out of 76 games, but yet you want to annually have them play two of the “big boys” schools?

FBS schools please don’t play these schools anymore.  I beg you.

It doesn’t make you better and it doesn’t prepare you for your conference.  All it does is allows you to pad your stats and take the fun out of the sport for your FCS opponent.  There are plenty of FBS fodder that you can feast on that will give you some sort of fight.

Playing the likes of Savannah State, or Grambling, is meaningless.  How do you fire up your players before that game?  “Hey guys, we gotta play Savannah State!  Guess what, they have lost 72 of their last 76 games.  Let’s go get them!”  You see where I’m going with this?  Stop the slaughter now!
