Damn, $50,000 is nothing to sniff at. In fact, that’s almost the entire fighter payroll for a Facebook prelim. But, Anderson Silva just had to cut a check to his employers for that sum because he decided to skip a Los Angeles media tour, now Ando may have to cut back to eating some Burger King while he recoups his losses.
This marks the second time the UFC has fined a main event fighter for skipping media obligations. The first most famously being Nick Diaz, who also received a $300,000 bonus for ATTENDING a media event once, so there’s that, but the point is clear: promote your fight. Sell some PPVs. Get some fans.
With UFC 162 about 7 weeks away, the time is now to do what media you need to do before fight week. And as a Los Angeles resident, I’m a little bummed I couldn’t speak to Anderson. That’s more personal than anything, though.
