One is 46 years old and the other is a mere 19. One has 12 PGA Tour wins. The other has zero. Both have zero majors and both played in and didn’t win this week’s John Deere Classic last year. But, both have great chances to come out on top Sunday. So don’t be surprised if they even share the final pairing in the final round. So who are these two players? None other than the veteran Steve Stricker and the phenom Jordan Speith. Photo Credit: Derick E. Steve Stricker hasn’t won on the PGA Tour this year and his last win came at the first event of the year in 2012, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. But he is a three-time champion of the John Deere Classic. In fact, he won it three straight times from 2009-2011. He went for the four-peat last year and finished T5 at 16-under. Obviously, he is a great pick to win this week because of his past success. This is his fifth consecutive year playing the event, so he knows the course as well as anyone. He teed off bright and early this morning at 7:30am on #10. Get ready for possibly another Strick-streak of victories at TPC Deere Run beginning this week. Photo Credit: Patrick Semansky/AP Only 27 years younger and 12 less PGA Tour career wins is Jordan Speith. He has a temporary tour card this year, so playing every week makes sense. He needs to make enough money to get a permanent card in 2014. In 15 starts in 2013, he has only missed four cuts. That’s unheard of for a rookie or even an inexperienced player. Since the beginning of March, Speith has five top-ten finishes, including four top-sevens. In his last four tournaments that he’s made the cut, he’s shot in the 60’s ten times. That’s 10 out of 16 rounds or 62.5%. Last week at The Greenbrier Classic, he shot three straight 67’s going into the final round on Sunday. Even though he shot a 73 to finish off the event, he still finished in the top-25. Two weeks ago at the AT&T National, he also shot three rounds in the 60s and finished in sixth-place. Speith is the hottest player on tour and should not be counted out again this week. Could this be his breakthrough week? Find out as he teed it up only a few groups behind Stricker at 8:10am on #10. The week before a major championship is usually only warm-ups for the world’s top players. But besides for Stricker and Speith, defending champion Zach Johnson and last week’s winner Jonas Blixt are competing to win this week. Next week can take care of itself when it comes, but this week’s John Deere Classic could be a turning point for any player in the field. Tune in all weekend as the John Deere Classic unfolds in Silvis, IL at TPC Deere Run. -O’Shea
