Let’s say a MLB team is not expected to compete much in its division. They’re short on talent, been known to have money troubles and have been having difficulty attracting fans to its ballpark. Let’s say most pundits have picked them to finish no better than fourth – and only because the team that’s projected to finish fifth can scarcely be called a “major league” team at all. There are no illusions about this team. But just because expectations are low, doesn’t mean that a game or a season can’t be infuriating. Meet the 2013 New York Mets. There are flashes here. There’s Matt Harvey, of course. Lucas Duda looks like he may have found the secret combo of patience and power that are the earmarks of a successful hitter. Jonathon Niese has looked solid as the rotation’s rock. David Wright is still on the team. The Mets have played nine games in ’13 and have been “in” eight of them – meaning, they’ve had at least a puncher’s chance at victory. There are glowing repo

Valdespin Heads Tonight’s Mets Lineup

VALDESPIN: Earn’s a start after a tripling and scoring on Tuesday. The Mets will attempt to win their third consecutive series tonight in Philadelphia, but the match-up of starter Jeremy Hefner against the Phillies is not a good one for them. Hefner took the loss in his last start against Miami, but gave the Mets a good effort, giving up a run in six innings. It was a quality start...

Daniel Murphy – The Mets’ Overlooked Offensive Star

Can you spot the overlooked offensive star in this photo? With all the attention being paid to John Buck’s torrid start, another Met’s offensive performance has gone under the radar.  But his start is just as noteworthy as Buck’s. Daniel Murphy has always been a great contact hitter, lashing doubles at a rate never before seen by a left-handed hitter in Mets history.  Nearly...

Who’s to Blame for Boneheaded Loss: Valdespin, Murphy, or …. ?

TweetIn case you missed it yesterday, the Mets lost again to the Phillies in Philly by a 7-3 score, but just about everyone is still talking about the boneheaded play that occurred in the fifth inning with the Mets still somewhat in the game. With one out in the fifth and the Mets trailing 5-2 at the time, the Mets had runners on second and third with one out due to Jordany Valdespin’s...

Hefner Clobbered In Mets 7-3 Loss To Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies handed the Mets their first series loss of the season tonight as they pounded the Amazins’ by a score of 7-3 in a game that featured six home runs at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. Jeremy Hefner took the hill for the Mets and and for the second night in a row a Mets starting pitcher failed to get past the third inning. Hefner struggled right from...

Game Chatter: Jeremy Hefner vs. Kyle Kendrick (4/10/13)

Kyle Kendrick is no ace yet he’s pitched well against the Mets.  He’s got a lifetime 3.56 ERA against the Mets.  Last year that would have been the 17th-best ERA in the National League.  He’s a punching bag for the rest of the league and turns into a #2 SP against New York.  Hopefully the Mets can beat him tonight and win their third straight series. To get started just...

Dear #MetsTwitter, JV1 is NOT Jose Reyes

*Photo Courtesy of  The 7 Line* The Dominican Republic has become the hotbed of  international talent for Major League Baseball.  Some of today’s brightest stars are from there, and that was on full display at this year’s World Baseball Classic as the Dominicans used “Plantain Power” to take home the championship. Much of the discussion during and following the tournament...

Phils Power Kendrick to 7-3 Win After Smooth Six

Brown mashed a Hefner pitch into the second deck in the first. Photo: AP Tonight’s game had all the makings of a disaster: Kyle Kendrick on the hill, up 5-1 in the second, with bases loaded immediately following a John Buck HR. It felt like what is now a too familiar story to the 2013 Phillies: a big early lead surrendered almost as quick. But then something remarkable happened...

This Mets Team Can’t Afford Mental Mistakes

I cringed as Domonic Brown’s three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning disappeared deep into the stands at Citizens Bank Park last night. Phillies 5, Mets 0 before we even blinked. But then I realized that Citizens Bank Park is band box, and one or two big swings would get the Mets right back in the game. Sure enough, homers from the red-hot John Buck and Lucas Duda...
