The Detroit Tigers played for just over a month without their leadoff hitter, Austin Jackson. Now, that wait is over. M-Live.com's Tigers beat writer Chris Lott reports that the Tigers have activated Jackson from the 15-day disabled list and will have him in the lineup tonight as the Tigers open a weekend series with the Minnesota Twins. Jackson was on the DL from May 12 to June 13 with a torn left hamstring. He played in three rehab games this week, hitting .231 (3 for 13). The good news, though, is that he was able to run well without issue, and he has returned to his team. Lott tweeted the news early Friday afternoon. Detroit Tigers activate Austin Jackson from disabled list, send Avisail Garcia to Triple-A Toledo STORY: http://t.co/MaOZaVEtmK — Chris Iott (@Chris_Iott) June 14, 2013 For the season, Jackson is hitting .273 with 2 HR and 11 RBI. He had hit very poorly in the few games leading up to his stint on the disabled list, but now that he is healthy, he should return to form. Jackson's ability to get on base at the top of the order gives the middle of the order -- Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and Victor Martinez -- even more RBI chances. Jackson has scored 33 runs in his 34 games. Entering play on June 14, the Tigers lead the A.L. Central by five games over the Cleveland Indians. The Tigers are third in the league in runs scored and second in ERA. This makes for a powerhouse in the division as they look for a third straight division title and a second straight World Series appearance. Follow Raymond on Twitter @RayBureau. Jose Valverde, No Team Wants a Closer Who Blows Saves

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander did what he always does. Verlander has a 15-2 record with a 2.56 ERA in 25 starts against the Kansas City Royals and he dominated again, with seven shutout innings, giving up just three singles and not permitting a runner past first. He struck out eight and walked two, while throwing 117 pitches.“Probably my best start of the season. I’m not...

Leyland says people are focused on the wrong things and the team will use Valverde until it’s determined he can’t get the job done

Coming on the heels of a Jose Valverde blown save the other night in Kansas City, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was apparently very animated in the pregame talk with the media Friday afternoon in Minnesota. According to Chris Iott of Mlive.com, Leyland gave his comments regarding the Valverde question when it comes to the 9th inning and whether or not people are focused on the right...

Tigers starting pitchers ... they're good

Remember when it seemed like the overwhelming majority of Tigers fans and the media were clamoring for 24-year-old Rick Porcello to get traded, so second-year lefty Drew Smyly could squeeze into the rotation? Can you imagine the added outrage over the Tigers' bullpen if future starter Smyly (2.09 ERA, 39K in 38.2 IP) wasn't in it? Yeahhhhh, it never made any sense, and...

Tigers Prospect Nick Castellanos is Best Pure Hitter in Minors

Nick Castellanos, the 44th-overall pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft by the Detroit Tigers out of Archbishop McCarthy High School (Florida), has been on a roll as of late for Triple-A Toledo in the International League. In his last ten games, Castellanos has batted .450 (18-for-40) with three home runs and 10 RBI, along with an impressive OBP/SLG/OPS line of .521/.750/1.271...

Game 2013.65: Tigers at Twins

Detroit Tigers: 36-28, 1st Place (4.5 ahead of Cleveland). Well the Tigers had a much-needed day off to shake off their latest one-run loss (their 11th), a 2nd consecutive Valverde home run derby which even had manager Jim Leyland playing hot potato. When Leyland says “who the (expletive) should I close with?” he does have a point. It wasn’t Leyland’s idea to have Valverde...

Game 2013.66: Tigers at Twins

Detroit Tigers: 37-28, 1st Place (4.5 ahead of Cleveland).  Who the (expletive) should Leyland close with? (to quote the skipper). Well it looks like the answer, for now, is going to be Jose Valverde, who is still the closer. (Although it should be noted that Valverde’s appearance was not a save situation, and that Phil Coke was warming up in the bullpen). Valverde himself was...

Tigers fan rocks tiger outfit, matching tiger puppet at Tigers game (video)

A fan who clearly has a near-animistic affinity for the Detroit Tigers made the bold decision to go all-out with his get-up when he attended took in his team taking on the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday. As you can see, this feline-favoring fan rocked a killer outfit, fully regaled in tiger [...]The post Tigers fan rocks tiger outfit, matching tiger puppet at...

Time for Tigers to stop kidding themselves about Jose Valverde

A quick glance at the MLB standings might lead you to believe that everything is fine with the Detroit Tigers. As of June 13, Detroit has a 4.5-game lead over the Cleveland Indians, the largest first-place margin in the American League and second-largest in the majors. The Tigers also have the best run differential in the league, scoring 81 runs more than they've allowed....

Why aren’t the Detroit Tigers better than they are?

A lot of Detroit Tigers fans keep scratching their heads wondering how this team can be dominating in so many statistical categories yet not thoroughly crushing the competition as a whole. It’s a fair point. The Tigers are 36-27, which is good enough to place them 5.5 games atop the spotty AL Central. 36-27 isn’t exactly a record that makes you want to hide your eyes. After all...

Jim Leyland: Expletive expletive I have no one to close games expletive times infinity

Jose Valverde is not the answer at the back end of the Tigers’ bullpen. Anyone who knows anything about baseball knows this to be fact. Jim Leyland knows something about baseball (how much depends on who you ask), but he was recently asked about the Tigers’ closer situation. “Some fans believe Valverde is a Leyland creation.  They think the manager loves him or he wouldn...

Rick Porcello is on the right track

If this was a season at the crossroads for Rick Porcello, it appears that hes taken the right turn. Porcello pitched seven shutout innings in Friday nights 4-0 win over the Minnesota Twins, and the Detroit Tigers received their 14th consecutive quality start. By becoming a four-pitch pitcher, Porcello has begun sparkling just as much as the four aces atop the rotation: Max Scherzer...

Detroit Tigers Sign First Round Pick Jonathon Crawford

The Detroit Tigers reached an agreement with first-round pick Jonathan Crawford. He was 3-6 with a 3.84 ERA and 69 strikeouts for the Florida Gators in 2013.  Crawford,  21, will receive a full slot value  signing bonus of $2,001,700.In 2012 Crawford posted a 2.30 ERA with a 13/2 strikeout to walk ratio in 15.2 innings, highlighted by a complete-game no-hitter against Bethune...

What You Knew and Didn’t Know About the Tigers and Astros

Part of this is the easy part. The Tigers are good and the Astros are bad, and that much you knew. That much you’ve known for weeks, or months, or years I guess depending on things. The Tigers lost on Wednesday, but they lost because of Jose Valverde and James Shields, and they still have a comfortable lead in the American League Central. I’m writing this before there’s a Wednesday...

Tigers-Twins Preview

Rick Porcello has played a part in the Detroit Tigers' streak of solid starts but his next opponent has given him some trouble recently. Porcello will try to earn his first win over the Minnesota Twins in nearly two years in Friday night's opener of a three-game series. Detroit's starters have allowed three runs or fewer in 18 of the last 19 games with Porcello (3-3...
