Kelly unlikely hero as Tigers rally past A's

DETROIT (AP) -- A dropped fly, two wild pitches and a little smooch for the baseball by a relieved reliever. Then Don Kelly brought it all to an end with a simple fly ball. Kelly scored the tying run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, then hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth that lifted the Detroit Tigers over the Oakland Athletics 5-4 Sunday for a 2...

Tigers Beat Athletics 5-4 in Game 2 to Take 2-0 Lead in ALDS

Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera doubled twice for the Tigers, hit a fly ball that resulted in a two-run error and later singled...

Verlander solid in Tigers' Game 1 win

DETROIT -- Don't think that a player as competitive as Justin Verlander doesn't know what his postseason record is or what the expectations are of him. In eight postseason starts, Verlander was 3-3 with a 5.57 ERA. Not very Cy Young or MVP-like, even when you consider those first four starts came when he was a rookie in 2006 and was -- in his words -- "gassed"...

Boesch left off Tigers' ALDS roster

The Detroit Tigers announced their American League Division Series roster, and outfielder Brennan Boesch isn't on it. Also notably missing are pitchers Brayan Villarreal and Darin Downs. Here's the Tigers' roster as the ALDS begins against The Oakland Athletics this evening (6:07 p.m.) at Comerica Park: Pitchers (11): Al Alburquerque, Joaquin Benoit, Phil Coke, Octavio...

What Don Kelly’s Game Winning RBI Means to Jim Leyland

Jim Leyland got pretty emotional discussing Don Kelly’s game winning RBI, ALDS Gm2 vs Oakland. www.BattingStanceGuy.com Twitter: @BattingStanceG Related PostsTop Kevin Millar & Chris Rose Teammate StancesWhat Would a Title Mean to Detroit? What Would a Title Mean to Milwaukee?

Tigers pitcher Al Albuequerque kisses baseball; infuriates A’s

Tigers reliever Al Alburquerque entered Sunday’s tied Game Two of the ALDS against the A’s with runners on first and third.  He precisely got the A’s third hitter Yoenis Cespedes to ground back to the box for the third out.  Obviously a little pumped up and grateful that he got a weak ground ball, Alburquerque showed his emotions by kissing the baseball before flipping it...

Tigers 5, Athletics 4

DETROIT -- Don Kelly hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to score Omar Infante, giving the Detroit Tigers a walkoff 5-4 victory over Oakland Athletics on Sunday and a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five division playoff series. Kelly had scored the tying run in the Tigers' eighth-inning rally that tied the game at 4-4. The series moves to Oakland, where the Tigers can...

Verlander overcomes slow start to stymie A's

DETROIT -- Must win? Sure, when Justin Verlander pitches for the Detroit Tigers. "You have to win when Justin in on the mound," catcher Alex Avila said Saturday night after Detroit did indeed win the first game of its best-of-five divisional American League Division Series from the Oakland A's, 3-1. "But they're all 'must win.' It's going...

Tigers ace strong in ALDS opener

Justin Verlander shut down Oakland after a leadoff homer, and Alex Avila went deep in the fifth inning to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Athletics 3-1 in the opener of their American League Division Series Saturday night. Verlander allowed three hits in seven innings and matched his career postseason high with 11 strikeouts. As usual, he seemed stronger in the later innings, striking...

Anderson set to return for A's in Game 3

With the Oakland A's down two games to none to the Detroit Tigers in the AL Division Series after a 5-4 loss Sunday, they return home with their top starter, Brett Anderson, likely to go in Game 3 on Tuesday. Manager Bob Melvin said that the A's would not make it official until Monday because they want to be sure Anderson is feeling entirely ready, but the team also wants...

At Least Tigers Fans Are Faithful

If there is one thing that you can't say about Tigers fans, it's that they support their players. Even when details like defensive ability and baserunning are presented in front of them. It's rather endearing that they show up to the game with crowns on carrying banners with sayings on them like the one in the picture above. It's also, well, slightly annoying to be...

Sabermetric-heads and traditionalists can both agree: Tigers’ Justin Verlander is easy pick for AL Cy Young award

Well, if the infatuation (see contest for AL MVP) with the sabermetric ‘Wins Above Replacement’ (WAR) remains consistent, Justin Verlander should be the 2012 American League Cy Young Award Winner. Among other things, Verlander is tops in the American League with a WAR of 7.5. Tampa Bay Rays’ ace David Price is a close second with 6.4. Last season when Verlander won the award...

Tigers Injury News: Alex Avila, Max Scherzer Healthy

The Detroit Tigers, while finishing with a worse record than the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers got to sit home and watch the drama of a one-game playoff unfold between those two teams. The Tigers already knew who they would be playing. By virtue of winning their division, they were not thrust into the horror that one game can bring. The Tigers will face the Oakland Athletics...

Tigers-Athletics Preview

Ideally, Jim Leyland would have everybody hug it out and play ball. Just as Detroit's Justin Verlander and Coco Crisp of Oakland did on the field for Monday's workout day ahead of their teams' Game 3 in the AL division series Tuesday. The Tigers lead 2-0 and are one win from advancing to a second straight AL championship series. Leyland insists reliever Al Alburquerque...
