If the Sounders had lost to the Houston Dynamo their playoff hopes would have been dashed. And they almost were. Play was tight for most of the game, the Sounders hardly breathing under the pressure of getting a result after the embarrassment of the New England match.

Each team had opportunities. For the Dynamo, the goal came first.  Geoff Cameron scored in the 36th minute off of a corner. The Sounders responded with trying to get the ball in the back of the net but were unsuccessful in the first half.

Freddie Ljungberg, back after being diagnosed hypoglycemic, nearly scored as he slid into the ball off a cross.

The second half proved more eventful for the Sounders. With the run of play in their favor they created numerous chances in front of the net, most of these chances orchestrated by Ljungberg.  Seattle almost scored twice early in the second half.

Osvaldo Alonso’s shot was ruled off-sides when Nate Jaqua touched the ball into the net from an off-sides position. A little later Steve Zakuani skied the ball over the net on an open goal shot. But he later redeemed himself when he headed the ball to Nate Jaqua for an assist to the goal in the 70th minute.

Sigi Schmid described the game as “one of those games that become defining moments, and this game was something that was really important to our character.” Hopefully that character will endure and carry the Sounders into the playoffs.
