Originally written August 22, 2014 on That NBA Lottery Pick:
There are few players in the course of NBA history that had more of an impact on the NBA game than Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant. In the upcoming issue for Sports Illustrated, writer Chris Ballard did an incredible piece on the Lakers star called Kobe Bryant’s “Twilight Saga”. Today, Ballard published some more quotes that he left out of the long form story on Twitter and noted that when Bryant was asked about the players who maximized their potential, he surprisingly said that Memphis Grizzlies Tony Allen was one of them: …and 2) Tony Allen. "Tony Allen is a big favorite of mine. Just how he plays and what he does." Which led me to call Tony… (contd) — Chris Ballard (@SI_ChrisBallard) August 22, 2014 When Ballard asked Allen about it, Tony was honored by the comment from Kobe: And Tony said: "Oh man, that’s an honor! From him?!…(pause). Don’t want to let that get to me though. Got to keep my competitive advantage" — Chris Ballard (@SI_ChrisBallard) August 22, 2014 Tony Allen also called Kobe: “the closest thing to Jordan in my era" and "I get to be able to tell the story that I got to guard that guy.” — Chris Ballard (@SI_ChrisBallard) August 22, 2014 But my favorite quote from Tony, being Tony, on Kobe: “Ain’t no scouting report for a guy who scored 82 points in a game!" — Chris Ballard (@SI_ChrisBallard) August 22, 2014 That’s a classic line from Tony! *** Allen image courtesy of Getty Images
