Kristians Pelss, a 7th round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 201o has died. Cause of death is believed to be due to drowning. On Wednesday it was reported that Pelss had gone missing in his home country of Latvia. Pelss flew home on Monday and went missing a couple days later. Reports out of the country’s capital of Riga stated that an eye witness had seen an unidentified man dive into the Daugava River on Tuesday. That man was Pelss; his body had been found by Latvian officials. The Edmonton Oilers have released a statement: “The Edmonton Oilers are deeply saddened by the loss of Kristians Pelss, a young man who played in our organization.  Kristians had gone missing earlier in the week after returning home to Riga, Latvia, for the offseason. Exact details in regards to what led to this tragedy remain unclear. He was just 20 years old.” Oilers General Manager Craig McTavish also commented on the tragic loss: “This is the news we feared. Kristians was an outstanding man and we feel terrible he has left us at such a young age.  I can’t imagine how painful this situation is for the Pelss family. On behalf of everyone working at the Oilers, Oil Kings and our affiliate teams, as well as all of our fans, I offer our most sincere and deepest condolences to his family and friends. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with them as they work through this incredibly difficult time.” All of us associated with Around The Rink and Sport-Kings would like to send our condolences to the family of Pelss, the Oilers, Oklahoma City Barons, Stockton Thunder, Edmonton Oil Kings, and Latvian Junior National Team on the loss of a talented young player who’s life was taken much too short.
