In a game that went 13 innings, every run was a big one Wednesday for the Minnesota Twins. Unfortunately for manager Ron Gardenhire's club, it left too many men on base and missed too many opportunities to push across a run and it resulted in a 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The two teams combined to leave 24 runners on base, and it was the Rays who stranded the majority of those with 15. Still, Minnesota was 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and had a few chances late in the game to do damage in those situations. The last came in the top of the 13th when rookie Oswaldo Arcia struck out to end the inning with runners on first and third and two outs. Arcia also had a chance to drive in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th but grounded out with runners on second and third and two outs. "He had a chance a couple times. He's just swinging out of the zone," Gardenhire said. "He was swinging a little crazy there. A young kid trying to do too much, tryi...

Pow! Twins' Arcia takes fly ball right in the kisser

July has been a tough month for the Minnesota Twins as they have dropped eight of their nine games to fall 11 games back of division-leading Detroit. A trip to Tropicana Field in Tampa has not brightened anyone's day, losing the first two games of the four-game series. For left fielder Oswaldo Arcia, it got even worse. Arcia was tracking down a fly ball at full speed in foul...

Twins rookie Oswaldo Arcia hit in face with foul popup (GIF)

Minnesota Twins rookie left fielder Oswaldo Arcia allowed a foul popup to hit him in the face during Tuesday night's game at Tropicana Field against the Tampa Bay Rays. Arcia could have used a glove on his face for that play. Ouch. GIF via GIFulmination. H/T FTW. Visit us at holdoutsports.com and follow us on Twitter @HoldoutSports.

Patrick Ruesse stirs the pot

As much as I have been a proponent of moving on from Ron Gardenhire, I have tried to maintain is a consistent message. While Patrick Reusse decided to advocate for the dismissal of the Twins’ long time manager, he suggested a line of thought that I believe is damaging to the Twins long term future. He is suggesting that the Twins let go of Gardenhire as something of a “mercy...

Twins outfielder Oswaldo Arcia gets hit in face by ball after popup whiff (video)

Being a resident of the fine State of Minnesota, I have had front row seats to the sad demise of the Minnesota Twins as a functional, competitive major league team. Perhaps front row seats isn’t the appropriate terminology, as I’d have to be loony to pay the exorbitant prices to watch such a sub-par product [...]The post Twins outfielder Oswaldo Arcia gets hit in face by ball...

Caleb Thielbar a bright spot for Twins in first half

Caleb Thielbar's impressive streak of scoreless innings may be over, but the Twins rookie has still been a bright spot for Minnesota during the first half of the year. Before Monday's game against Tampa Bay, Thielbar had yet to allow a run in his first 19 23 innings of his major league career. Since making his debut on May 20, Thielbar made Twins history with his scoreless...

Twins fan feeds girlfriend sunflower seeds during game (GIF)

Unfortunately, any Minnesota Twins fans in the St. Petersburg area on Tuesday who took in their favorite team facing the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field were dealt with suffering through another agonizing, borderline unwatchable (other than Oswaldo Arcia’s colossal derp when trying to field a foul popup) loss. So, said fans had to do [...]The post Twins fan feeds girlfriend sunflower...

Rays take on Twins looking for seventh straight win

The Minnesota Twins' offense and pitching both continue to prove unreliable during the team's rough stretch. Those troubles could continue Wednesday night as they face a hot pitcher while their own hurler tries to turn things around. Minnesota tries to avoid losing its sixth straight road series when it faces Jeremy Hellickson and the Tampa Bay Rays, who seek a season-high...

Twins rookie reliever Michael Tonkin pitching with a purpose

The Minnesota Twins have had a handful of players make their major league debuts this season. Add reliever Michael Tonkin to the list. The 23-year-old Tonkin debuted Thursday at Tropicana Field, pitching 1 13 innings of relief in Minnesota's 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. He entered Thursday's game with the Twins trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tonkin...

Twins Tuesday: Fourth inning does in rookie pitcher Kyle Gibson

If Kyle Gibson's major league debut was memorable and his second outing was forgettable, Gibson's third career start was somewhere in between. The Twins right-hander allowed four runs Tuesday against Tampa Bay, all in the fourth inning, as he and Minnesota fell, 4-1, to the Rays at Tropicana Field. As a result, Gibson fell to 1-2 with a 7.27 ERA in his young career. Gibson...

Preview: Yankees vs Twins (7/12/13)

Hiroki Kuroda (7-6, 2.77 ERA) goes up against the Twins the first time this season with Scott Diamond (5-8, 5.52 ERA) on the mound for Minnesota. Diamond made his second career start on his native soil vs. the Blue Jays on Sunday, and it was forgettable. He went just 4 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits while tying his career high walks with four. Before the Yankees...

Links of the Day 7/10/13

Good morning. Couldn’t sleep, so here are some links. Oswaldo Arcia had a tough time with a fly ball. In the event you didn’t know, pretty much all of the All Stars are former Twins. I don’t know why I didn’t wrap my head around this, but Roger Maris still holds the AL single season home run record. SCOREBOARD MLB Chicago 11, Detroit 4 – It’s only July, but Chicago is...

Rays 4, Twins 1

Chris Archer pitched six strong innings, while Matt Joyce and Kelly Johnson drove in two runs apiece to help the surging Tampa Bay Rays extend their winning streak to a season-best six games with a 4-1 victory over the sputtering Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Archer (3-3) limited the Twins to an unearned run and three hits to outpitch fellow rookie Kyle Gibson (1-2), who was...
