It’s beginning to look like 2013 is the year of the blown call in Major League Baseball.  Last night’s extra inning game between the Giants and Rockies played up the reputation.  But shockingly, it did not involve umpire Angel Hernandez – who I happen to think is the worst umpire in baseball. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the 12th inning Thursday night, the Padres scored the go-ahead and eventual winning run on a play that had two blown calls.  The calls were split in that one was blown in favor of each team.  The ultimate outcome of the play was not changed (the run should have counted regardless), but the calls were horribly obvious and can be added to the list of embarrassments for umpires. Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal hit a ground ball to third that was fielded by Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado.  Arenado correctly tried to step on third and throw to first for the inning-ending double play.  However, Arenado failed to step on third before releasing the ball to first.  But, as you will see, third base umpire Cory Blaser incorrectly ruled the runner out.  Arenado’s throw to first undoubtedly beat Grandal to first, however first base ump Ed Hickox joyously ruled him safe. One play, two egregiously blown calls.  And it wasn’t as if the slow-motion replay outted the umpires.  These calls were pretty obvious in real time.
