Oregon Bracket: Academics square off in battle of darkness

We wrap up the Oregon Bracket of 2012 Uniform Madness with a match-up of academic powers. But just because they may have the book smarts does not mean they know anything about football fashion design.

The Duke BLUE Devils?

Duke gets us started with a four-seed for their attempt to adopt a black uniform style. Much like their fellow basketball power and football afterthought from Kentucky, black jerseys are a no-no for the Blue Devils. BLUE Devils.

As we have set the precedent a few times by now, when a school has a color somewhere in their name or nickname, abandoning the color is a violation according to the committee. For Duke to try suiting up in an all-black jersey, except for the helmet, is terms for an automatic bid in the tournament.

Duke, like Kentucky, has become synonymous with blue and white the way Penn State has. Why these basketball powers feel it necessary to dress in black shows a sign that when it comes to football there is no identity. Duke’s basketball team has also taken the court in black as well, which is an equally sever violation as far as the committee is concerned.

Because when you think of Stanford, you think black uniforms.

Stanford also falls victim to an equal offense but receives a much lower seed in the first round due to their level of success on the field. If you are going to where black then you have to be prepared to be tough, and Stanford has done that.

Stanford’s all-black uniform is a violation of the color-in-name rule according to the committee, which considers “Cardinal” a color, and the white helmet does not mix well with the look, so there was no question Stanford would be included. The all-black look narrowly edged Stanford’s Pro Combat uniform for an at-large bid in this tournament.

So, which uniform was the worst? Cast your vote below and send one of these get-ups to the second round. Voting will continue through Thursday night, with polls closing at 11 p.m. EST
