This Saturday’s Notre Dame versus USC matchup is rare in that it features two unranked teams. That doesn’t happen much in the Notre Dame versus USC rivalry. Preview and prediction here. Last night’s Inside College Football on CBS Sports Network Aaron Taylor told a great story from a time when this game had more steak to complement its sizzle. Taylor talked about learning the history of the USC vs Notre Dame game when he was a freshman at Notre Dame. “We started coming in and every day before the team meeting (Lou Holtz) would start to talk to us and tell us a little bit about the history… So we all were kind of just tuning it out, getting ready during the week. Then we get to Friday. As a true freshman, I had worked my way up to second team. I wanted to travel to Southern California, because I was from California. (I wanted to) see my friends. And then Holtz pops it on us. There was going to be a written test on all the information about the history of the Notre Dame vs USC game. The color left everybody on that team. We were in the meeting rooms and 3×5 (index cards) were keeping us alive. We were cheating and trying to get the answers. Of course the older guys all knew (what was going on)… The bottom line was he was trying to get us to understand how important the history of that game was. And he always had these really great ways of making sure that we did.” Paul M. Banks is the owner of The Sports Bank.net, an affiliate of Fox Sports.
