Virginia Tech knows what its like to live through unspeakable tragedy, but they also know what it's like to respond to the horror with inspiring resilience and an undaunted sense of community. The Hokies will aim to inspire the people of Newtown, Connecticut to stand together with the same strength when they take the field in the Russell Athletic Bowl tomorrow night, wearing this tribute to the Sandy Hook victims.
The ribbon (pictured above) intertwines the orange ribbons worn in the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre with the green ribbons symbolizing Sandy Hook, and the 58 in the middle is a sobering and shocking reminder of the combined dead at each school. The "58" is covered by one word, symbolizing Virginia Tech's response in 2007, Sandy Hook's response in 2012, and America's response every time some deranged asshole tries to tear our communities apart with senseless violence:
